Joe,
I wrote Oracle9i RMAN Backup and Recovery using 9iR2. I pounded the database
pretty hard. It seemed to be a very solid release and I would recommend it
over 9iR1.

In
your case, the recovery catalog makes it MUCH MUCH easier! :-) So, I'm
not saying you are incorrect, only that nobody should ever think they are
unrecoverable just because RMAN can not find a backup set record in the
repository or control file.
I think that if you have properly architected your systems that the
possibility of loosing both the recovery catalog database AND the control
file of a given database is sufficiently low. If the infrastructure it
properly configured, then you are talking a very rare event. However, assume

Thanks for the reply.
That covers the object/data_object id problem, and gives
the ability to identify which columns in the dump are the
primary key columns.
But when you update a row, the redo will only contain the
primary key if the primary key has been modified, so you

oh Lord, I hope not. The scripts aren't that perfect.
Besides, that would get REALLY noisy, wouldn't it?
I don't put comments in because I'm perfect, I put them in because of
the exact opposite condition. Swiss-cheese memory, so if I don't

RMAN checks archivelogs for corruption while backing them up
That was the dealmaker, Tim; that's one thing only our man, RMAN can do, no
one else.
Thanks for the tip.

No, I won't post it because I downloaded it from another list member's
website (??) years ago.
Ask me again on Monday, when I'm back in the office will be able to give
a better (more detailed) answer.
And I learned, in the one management class I ever took, that if I ever

my job one that someone else can step into.
You know, if more people realized that, then there would be fewer people
complaining about not moving up in
Archivelogs can be verified for corruption using a standby database (a.k.a.
Data Guard), Log Miner, or the undocumented ALTER SYSTEM DUMP LOGFILE
logfile-name command, but why bother? It takes far more effort to
implement one of these mechanisms (except standby) for every single
archivelog
Oooo yea another nice feature...

Don't forget about the more important issue of detecting corrupted archived
redo logfiles. Datafile corruption can be bad; redo log file

Hi All,
A developer I work with has asked if there are any books which cover both
advanced SQL and SQL tuning in the one title. Does anyone know of such a
book?
Essentially we have several developers here who know the basics of SQL but

Mark,
I would suggest Guy Harrison's Oracle SQL High-Performance Tuning (ISBN:

Robert,
Seven reasons I can think of include changes to:
1. Oracle instance parameter values (changes when you edit the
parameters, whether in the stored init.ora way, or via ALTER SYSTEM or
ALTER SESSION commands)
2. Database table and index statistics (changes, e.g., when you run
