[osg-users] Building new website, assistance appreciated!

2012-04-11 Thread Robert Osfield
Hi All,

As most of you will know that the present openscenegraph.org Tracs
based website has been unresponsive in the last week and even over the
last few months has been pretty patchy. I've discussed previously
about the need to move to new a server for new website and adoption of
new version control system. For now subversion still looks to be
relatively reliable on the old servers so don't believe this is a
critical issue to deal with right away - the website is out of action
so this will be focus for the short term. Items like public support,
merging submissions will take a lower priority for me untill we get a
basic functional website back online.

Unfortunately the timing isn't ideal as it's Easter holidays so I have
all my children home and extended family staying with us so I have a
household with party atmosphere which is fun, but... not so good for
learning about server/web technologies and actually implementing a
website. What time I have had on the computer I've put into learning
and experimenting with Joomla hosted on Dreamhost. I've set up so
that my experiments with Joomla are up at
http://www.openscenegraph.com. There is the beginnings of what could
become our new website, I'm still very new to website tech and am far
from a graphic designer in terms of skills so it's crude, but I'm
encouraged enough to believe that it will be possible to master Joomla
and make a website that fits our project needs.

Given that the old website is out of action right now I'm happy to
just get something basic up so at least we have some online presence,
so rather than keep hunting around for the perfect server and website
solution I think it be worth just going with Joomla and fixing up what
I've already put up to make it functional. If Joomla doesn't work
well for the basics then we can look at other solutions, but for now
time is too critical to go debating options - we need a solution
quick.

So... here am I a novice on the website and server side, rather feeble
linguist and graphics artist and short of time as well, all together I
don't make an idea person to take on whole task of building a new
website. I need the communities help. I would love to here from
engineers that have Joomla experience or are willing to pitch in with
learning it in short order, or have time and skills that suit the task
of building a new website. Joomla allows us to have user logins to
the website and to grant users different sets of rights to edit and
maintain the website. If you can help out please create yourself a
login and let me know what areas of the website you think you could
help out with and between us we can decide who tackles what, and I'll
grant the appropriate rights. I'm still learning Joomla so if you
have experience with maintaining websites with Joomla then you
insights on what rights to grant to who and how to go about managing
things would be very much appreciated.

As getting a new website is a critical issue right now I'm putting on
hold merging of submissions and doing public support so please be
patient with this, and if you'd like me to be back tackling these
types of task quickly then helping out with the website will speed
this up.

Please don't be shy with coming forward, the OpenSceneGraph project
(website) needs YOU :-)

Thanks in advance for your assistance,
Robert.

Re: [osg-users] std::isnan on GCC 4.6.3

2012-04-11 Thread Alberto Luaces
Hi Chris,

Chris Best writes:

Meh. Well this is embarrassing. Your test prog compiled, so I did some
more digging... Turns out one of the libraries we depend on had 'using
namespace std;' in a header file because the author didn't want to
 type std:: twice...

The person responsible has been appropriately tortured.

That made me laugh! I'm glad you could find and solve your problem.

I guess my question still kinda stands, though... Wouldn't it be
better to use an explicit std::isnan on line 221 instead of using
whatever is in the global namespace?

Given that —according to Mathias— the only system using the math.h
header was SGI IRIX and it's not supposed to be supported anymore —since
he has been the principal contributor for all of those other unices—
maybe a solution like the one you proposed yesterday could be
reasonable. Nevertheless I'd wait for comments from other members of the
community as subtle gotchas could creep in.

Hi there,

I would guess that CMAKE_OSX_SYSROOT is not defined - this might be related
to XCode living in /Applications as opposed to /Developer now. If you have the
new XCode from the App store and did not compile your own CMake it won't work
as the latest CMake release does not yet work with XCode in /Applications [1].
Either compile cmake with the next tag from svn or try one of the
nightlies[2].

Best regards
Stefan

Well that comment is only about the math.h - cmath issue.
That does not mean that everywhere c++11 is available.
As far as I can remember std::isnan is only part of the newest c++ standard.

As we here do no longer need osg on the unices, I can live well with
supporting just linux and windows and macos, where we probably already have
this part of the c++11 standard available on new enough compilers. But I am
not sure if this holds for everyone using osg.

[osg-users] ViewDependentShadowMap

2012-04-11 Thread Daniel Schmid
Hi all

Somehow I feel pretty alone out here working with VDSM...
I have a huge paged terrain, and shadow looks awesome unless that as soon as I
change my viewpoint (move camera), the shadows start to flicker and fuzz. I
need somehow to limit the shadow distance... similar to MinimalShadowMap where
you can set min max clip plane. I tried to modify computeShadowCameraSettings
method by setting the xyzMinMax values fort he projectionMatrix to fix values,
but this didn't bring much success.

Does anybody have a modified or advanced version of VDSM with a clipping limit ?

Daniel

Re: [osg-users] ViewDependentShadowMap

2012-04-11 Thread Wang Rui
Hi Daniel,

Original VDSM may not work well with huge terrain and city models as I just
tested it some time ago, but I'm too busy these few days. PSSM must be
implemented to allow higher resolution near to the viewer, and
projective/persp aliasing can hardly be removed without more changes to the
model itself. I've just uploaded an initial version of modified VDSM on
osg-submissions but not merged currently. You may have a look at it in the
mail list.

  Hi all

 ** **

Somehow I feel pretty alone out here working with VDSM… ** **

I have a huge paged terrain, and shadow looks awesome unless that as soon
as I change my viewpoint (move camera), the shadows start to flicker and
fuzz. I need somehow to limit the shadow distance… similar to
MinimalShadowMap where you can set min max clip plane. I tried to modify
computeShadowCameraSettings method by setting the xyzMinMax values fort he
projectionMatrix to fix values, but this didn’t bring much success.

 ** **

Does anybody have a modified or advanced version of VDSM with a clipping
 limit ?

[osg-users] loading to texture memory?

2012-04-11 Thread Akilan Thangamani
Hi,

I have GPU of having 1GB texture memory.
I like to load large volume of data into texture memory( using SetImage()), but
less than 1GB, and render part by part of the data for every frame.
Does OSG contains any function call to transfer only portion of texture memory
to the display?
To my knowledged, SetImage() in osg::Texture2D is the only call to load data
into texture memory directly, I think?

Thanks

[osg-users] Robert Osfield robert.osfi...@gmail.com, Building new website, assistance appreciated!

2012-04-11 Thread Thomas Hogarth
Hi Robert,

So I have been looking at other options like dropal (or whatever it was
called), I think you're right that we should just stick with Joomla, as I
like you don't really know enough to make an educated decision.

I have a web server of my own with these one click installs so I am going
to try setting something similar up just to get a better feel.

I just tried to make a Joomla account on the OSG website
but haven't received my confirmation email yet (been around 10 mins so not
the end of the world).

So I take it the joolma part would have more polished content like news,
downloads etc, then we will link to MediaWiki for part or all of the
documentation?

As I've said I'm up for helping out, and will certainly maintain IOS
specific stuff, but can help out in other areas. Although my emails don't
show it (lazy email typing) I
can serve well as a proof reader etc.

Let me know something you might like me to work on first and I'll get stuck
in.

Cheers

I believe Chris has already answered your question. The source code shows what
is displayed at various verbosity levels. IMO, the important information is the
list of OpenGL extensions, and a dump of the loaded shader code. These are
displayed with OSG_NOTIFY_LEVEL set to INFO.

OSG doesn't use a logging system (such as Poco) that allows you to set varying
verbosity levels per module; the verbosity level applies to all of OSG. During
development, I often write messages to DEBUG_FP, but I usually use a common tag
at the start of the message so I can pipe it to grep to filter out the cruft I
don't want to see.

Hi Paul,
Ok the message Zachary was seeing was due to the extra lines in renderer.cpp
which have replaced the OSG_NOTIFY with DEBUG_MESSAGE.
Thats assuming the latest SVN is used here.
Not sure why the DEBUG_MESSAGE is being used, I can only guess that this a
transitional phase whilst implementations are being tested in SVN.
Anyone know?

I've also been having a look at features that could make the tutorials easier

So is the plan to flesh out what you have on Joomla site (downloads, about,

[osg-users] Android OSG SVN version

2012-04-11 Thread Jan Ciger

Hello,

I am trying to get the current SVN version of OSG working on my Android
phone and I am tearing my hair out here. The osgAndroidExampleGLES1
flashes the UI and crashes right away with a segfault or a bus error
(attached log).

I have tried to use both v5 ABI, v7 ABI, disable NEON (even though my
HTC Desire HD has a Snapdragon CPU and should support it), compile for
Android-8 and 10 and nothing works - always this stupid crash in the C
runtime.

On the other hand, the examples from the Android NDK do work, including
the HelloGL2 one, so OpenGL should work on the phone to at least some
degree. Also, we had the older 2.8.x version of OSG running on the phone
before.

NDK version is android-ndk-r7b, Android SDK is r18, running on 32bit
Linux. The phone is running Android 2.3.3 with HTC Sense 2.1 (stock HTC
ROM).

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? I will be really
grateful for any pointers ...

[osg-users] osgvolume brightness and sample density

2012-04-11 Thread Clement.Chu
Hi,

I am using osgVolume to display my CT data. If I set the value of
SampleDensityProperty lower, I can get more details, but the brightness will
become darker or dull. Does any method that allow to use smaller value of
SampleDensityProperty and keep image colour brighter. I tried to use
LightingProperty, but I don't know why I got an error to have this property.

Regards,
Clement

Re: [osg-users] Building new website, assistance appreciated!

2012-04-11 Thread Vaclav Bilek
Hi,

I also tried to register and got the same result as Paul and Jason. I
still did not get the registration email. I tried to register again with
the same registration data and I have got following message from the system:

*

The username you entered is not available. Please pick another
username.

*

The email address you entered is already in use or invalid. Please
enter another email address.

So from the information I have it looks like the registration is pending
and only the registration mail was not successfully sent or delivered.
My guess will be to check the configuration of mail delivery settings.

Another experience is that I did the same as Martin, I put my surname as
username. I would expect that this may be also confusing for other users.

Vaclav

 Hello,

Although I put my username as my surname and cannot change it :)

 Cheers

 Hi Paul and Jason,

If you haven't received the registration email by tomorrow I should be able
to enable registration myself or simply add you. However, if you are having
problems now then there is good chance a chunk of the rest of the community
will have problems too so it'd be good to get to the bottom of it.

 Robert.
