Kuwaiti ministry grills new political party members

By Nirmala Janssen, Correspondent
Kuwait City: Ten of the 15 elected members of the recently launched Hizb
Ul Ummah or Nation Party were summoned for questioning by the Interior
Ministry and were held for eight hours and released without charge.

"They may summon us again for questioning at a later date but we don't
know when," a weary member of the political party, Awad Al Busairi, told
the Gulf News from the police station in Jahra at 6pm.

"We have been here since 10am and we have been questioned in groups," he
said.

"They have been very polite but we have been accused of gathering
illegally without a licence and for distributing pamphlets and
publications to the press and others gathered at the meeting," he added.

Al Busairi also said that group members who were interrogated were kept
isolated in a special room away from those who were yet to be
questioned. "The Kuwaiti constitution allows all of us the liberty to
gather …. Diwaniyas where discussions take place are part of our
traditions and legally speaking none of us believe we have done anything
wrong or that we have broken the law."

On the distribution of publications charge, Al Busairi said, "We have
nothing to hide. We have sent the same publications which is in actual
fact our charter to the prime minister and the speaker of the National
Assembly."

"We are trying to develop the democratic process in Kuwait," he said.
"We want real elections, equal opportunities and social liberties …. We
are looking for an evolution in the democratic process of the country,"
Al Busairi added.

He also said the party's aim at the press conference was "to declare our
peaceful political charter".

President of the party Dr. Mohammad Al Hadran, the Secretary-General
Hakim Al Mutairi and the spokesman Dr. Hussain Al Saeedi were all
separately interrogated, Al Busairi said.

Al Mutairi said at Saturday's press conference that letters had been
sent to the Prime Minister Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah and the
Speaker of the National Assembly Jasssem Al Khorafi to ask them to
change the law to accommodate the establishment of political parties.

However, the speaker said on Monday, "I did not receive any such
communication and we are not the authority to licence the establishment
of such a body."
