You can also write a http handler to track requests to the web services and

hamper overall performance. Doing it on the hardware\firewall side of things

There is another solution - by adding a control on the my site home page. Since
that home page is ghosted (runs from the hard drive) you can edit it, add the
control, which checks the theme and if it is not the right one sets it.
There is even a codeplex project that did the coding for you

And what is the column type? And what is the CAML of the view (you can see that
by loading the view in c#)

It's usually a problem with the query's xml. But glad you worked around it.

Two things to try - in IE8, make sure you are not running in compatibility
mode, and if it is, try disable intranet mode for the site.

I don't think so. I think that would be out of scope of the architecture.

Can you not use groups to group the ones that are ok to change and ones that
aren't? I am afraid there aren't many pointers in an SPField to tell you if you
should edit its properties or not.

Agreed - the form web part is the correct one for scripts - the CEWB is too
picky at what it will allow to run.

I'd look at Colligo and OnePlaceMail - the two market leaders in this space.

NEVER save sites as templates. Instead, develop your own webtemplate, and use
feature stapling to activate publishing features and implement custom features.

If you hard code the path does it work?
Try that to test if the problem is the path or the type.
Top of my head I think you should do
$rootFolder.Files.Add(/$rootfolder/test.aspx

How about looping over the connection points and checking what is available for
each web part? You already have the code that gets you the array of connection
points.

2010, on premise, no ADFS.
This is a simple deployment, with the only complexity being that there are
multiple servers in the farm...not even hardware load balancing.
