Typhoon May Hit Malaysia In Future, Says Expert
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The current typhoon pattern is so
worrying that some experts believe that typhoons may hit Malaysia in the
future.
According to Ti Le Hui, a Chinese typhoon expert who also works with the
United Nations, year by year scientists have noticed that the area where
typhoons form is getting closer to the South.
"Malaysia will be hit by typhoons in future. The weather today is
unpredictable. In recent years, we see more typhoons coming to the South,"
he told reporters after the conference on Socio-Economic Impact Assessment
of Typhoon-Related Disaster and Risk Management Towards Millennium
Development Goals, here Monday.
The five-day conference opened by Natural Resources and Environment
Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Sazmi Miah was attended by nearly
100 participants including foreign experts.
Ti said that dua to the change in their pattern, scientists were worried
that typhoons which constantly hit Taiwan and Japan were now moving towards
Southeast Asia.
The region recorded 10 to 20 types of typhoons that left a trail of debris
from Sabah to the Philippines, he said.
Meanwhile, Sasmi told reporters that the new threat of typhoons might pass
the peninsula.
"We had typhoons in Sabah in the past, that too only the tail end. Even
then many people died," he said.
Realising the change in typhoon pattern, Malaysia had invited foreign
experts to help it prepare for the new threat.
He said Malaysia often experienced tropical storms but was not prepared for
other threats and Malaysians never thought that the country would be hit by
a tsunami like the one on Dec 26 last year.
Floods alone cost the country RM915 million a year in losses, he said.
