If you have Sound Forge SF * at least I mean you can open these files
from the file menu. I seem to believe that SF 7 would also extract sound
from .mpg files.
BT SF 8 will definitely do so.

Subject: Problem with MPG Files

Hi all. I thank everyone who tried to help me with this, but I didn't
seem to get much help. These files that are on this CD that are MPG files
are a challenge. I don't really want to listen to these stories on the
computer; so I have to find some viable solution. I don't know if I can
convert with Soundforge, or convert to WAV or MP3, or what I can do.
Should I use a trial version of Nero? Or Easy CD Creator? Or Premier CD
Creator? Is there a solution to this that doesn't entail sitting in front
of my computer to listen to these stories. MPG's are video files. Maybe
I'll have to make a DVD to play on my DVD player, where I eventually want
to play these files. I can play DVD's, naturally, on it; I can play MP3's
on it, but I can't play those MPG files on it, unless maybe some sighted
assistance can help me get round this problem. Please, I would like some
real solutions. Pardon my rant, folks.

Re: Problem with MPG Files

2005-04-01 Thread Jerry Richer
Gary! MPG is short for MPEG which stands for Motion Picture Experts
Group. It is a protocol for compressing Video and Audio. An MPG file has a
video component, a audio component and information that defines what video
goes with what audio. MPx is the audio component of a MPG file. In your
case you have MP3. There are MP1 and MP2 and MP4 as well. When you load an
MPG file into something like Sound Forge that is only designed to handle
audio you get just the audio part of the MPG. I better stop. I'm getting
onto thin ice here.

Hi Bruce. I'm sorry if my tone sounded severe in my last email. I really
do appreciate all your suggestions. I just have to figure out which ones I
might want to apply. Goldwave sounds like a great program, but I got
Soundforge a few years ago for $99.00. At that time, it was a bargain,
since it usually costs around $500. Is the Winamp plug-in, you've been
talking about come with the program? Again, I apologize for the tone in my
last post, but I went to the Nero website to download a trial version of
that, but I couldn't find a place where I can do that. Probably compared to
most of you, I'm probably a novice at this stuff. Like I said before, it's
probably a matter of which solution I might want to try implementing. -

By using the demo of Gold Wave for your purposes, you're not showing any
disloyalty to Sound Forge, if that's what's worrying you. You install the
demo, convert your files, then you can delete the demo. It's really the
fastest and most complete solution to your problem. And it's also the

Re: Problem with MPG Files

2005-03-31 Thread Bruce Toews
Yes. Essentially you go into preferences in Winamp, go to plugins, output
plugins, and then choose the disk writer plugin. Somewhere there you'll be
asked for a filename. I've never used this plugin as it jsut seems like
too much of a bother. What you then do is run the MPG file, wait for it to
complete, and you should have a wave file of what you've just listened to.
This method requires saving in real-time.

or what I can do. Should I use a trial version of Nero? Or Easy CD
Creator? Or Premier CD Creator? Is there a solution to this that
doesn't entail sitting in front of my computer to listen to these
stories. MPG's are video files. Maybe I'll have to make a DVD to play
on my DVD player, where I eventually want to play these files. I can
play DVD's, naturally, on it; I can play MP3's on it, but I can't play
those MPG files on it, unless maybe some sighted assistance can help
me get round this problem. Please, I would like some real solutions.
 Pardon my rant, folks.

With all due respect, you have been offered some real solutions. You
don't want to use a trial version of Gold Wave, you haven't given us
the results of trying to open the files in Sound Forge, the idea of
using Winamp to convert them to wave files doesn't seem to interest
you, what do you want from us?

Then you'll need to find someone wiser than I. I don't know anything about
burning an MPG file to a DVD for the purposes of watching it on a home DVD
player. All I know is how to extract the audio from the file and do it
that way.
