Hi Jamie,
the slash in the command lines you are copying are necessary, as in:
sudo cd where you downloaded pdp/pidip
sudo cp pdp_pidip_osx.tar.gz /
sudo cd /
sudo tar xvfz pdp_pidip_osx.tar.gz
The / means the top of you file tree, where all the directories come from.

I think the DIY route is a good one, depending on your
abilities, you can get a fairly pre-made board from
doepfer attach (screw on) jack sockets for up to 16
pedals (or more with expansion), or you might look at
an even more DIY solution if you are good at soldering
building stuff

Linux uses a different device structure (Video4Linux) for video input
than OS X, so [pdp_v4l] will never work.
In short, Linux users can access a USB camera with [pdp_v4l], but not a
firewire one.
OS X users can access a firewire camera with [pdp_ieee1394], but not a
USB one.
If you use GEM
I thought I read about a source-patch in the CVS version of GEM that
allows multiple GEM windows. Check the archives about this, since I
don't know more than that. Another option would be to map each camera
onto a different square and put all the squares into one [gemwin].

You don't need three windows to have three cams in GEM. SIze the one window
3X by Y and tile the images across. Do you even need to see the video
onscreen beyond testing?

At least it seems to be physically impossible to hit the hand, only a
finger could be cut off.
It doesn't seem like you could cut off a finger, with the blade
running lengthwise. No doubt it would hurt a lot, though. This is
all a bit morbid. Oh, well
I would trust Pd and the sensors in this
