I'm not a mac user, but I agree with Godfrey. Aperture can be a good
place to start and seem to be a lot of software for the money. The
other alternatives mentioned are good programs too; Lightroom and
Photoshop Elements. There are others too. Like LightZone

If you look at the seascapes where the horizon is broken by foreground
(eg. #3), you can see how the foreground gets progressively darker
upwards. This guy is making extensive use of gradient gray filters.

That's making a bunch of images focused at different distances and then
combining them either by hand or with special software like Helicon Focus.
Especially useful for those deep DOF macro shots.

Sharpening the L channel in LAB space is a great method that prevents
any colour shifts. (This is effectively what the sharpening controls in
ACR and LR do now apparently.)
I've always found that filtering that you apply to the A or B channels
has only really subtle effects. I don't think

tough in bright yellow flowers I've found.
