Went for a walk today to have a look at a spot where they used to feed horses hanging from a gibbet to hounds. The knacker’s yard is no longer there, but the kennels are. A scene in one of Thomas Hardy’s novels, The Hand of Ethelberta, was set here, featuring this rather gruesome activity.
