You can use all your lenses on all digital SLR bodies with a proper
adapter (if they are of the M42 screw mount type).
Type K and M lenses are slightly impractical to use; A, FA and FAJ
ones are perfect fits!
I guess a used K20D might offer the best price/performance ratio but
I'm sure

Compositionally speaking, I believe the partially seen flag at upper
right corner alone would suffice.
We could then see the people and after a short while, reach the clue
about the context.
This way it is too obvious and (I agree your wife) distracting.

The width of the area photographed was about 8 cm, I guess.
The ratio should be around 1:3, roughly.

The process was simple:
Backlighting using a home-made fluorescent light source.
Sigma 70 mm macro lens (which, I love, by the way). Raw.
Lovering the contrast a bit.
Conversion to B&W and toning (in fact, the original tones were quite similar).
Sharpening for screen.

The exaggerated foreground increases he sense of isolation (and,
non-communication) of the child.
This would not be as effective with a busy, frame occupying background.

Today I have found a Carl Zeiss Jena Kipronar 1:1,9 f=135mm "lens".
I guess this is a lens for projection devices and was built in,
perhaps, nineteen forties.
It does not seem to be coated.
No diaphragm is present. Likewise, no focusing ring...
It seems to have two elements (or, groups)

I liked the image in spite of the already mentioned blemishes.
Also, the idea of flipping either the upper or the lower part of the
image (left to right) came to my mind.
Should be easy especially with a noisy original (markings will be
easier to hide).
Of course it may be an extreme case of

In fact, the biologically strategic position of Anatolia through ages
has made it a rather uniqe place.

I have recently visited a rather secluded part of Eastern Anatolia:
Kemaliye (Egin).
The area has an Alpine climate.
Some very deep canyons are present.
Most of the villages keep their authentic shapes.
I enjoyed mostly some detail shots and occasional abstracts.
