Pentax goes that way, I see it as having yet one less option

Why? If you don't do AF, the AF system is irrelevant to you (Although I
generally find the focus rings to be better damped on USM-type lenses
tan most screw-drive lenses). And USM is a win for AF users, with faster
focus and less hunting.

Not significantly to either for USM lenses. The motor adds about as much
weight as removing the mechanical linkage saves. It's cheaper to
manufacture, and adds only slightly to the diameter of the lens for most
lenses.

Yes, but it's probably more than made up for by the cost savings in
glass reduction (of a DA lens compared to a full-frame lens).
If we look at Canon lenses as an example and consider equivalent
pairs of lenses, the USM ring servos do add some increment of bulk
and weight in many cases (not all). Pricing is higher for some
equivalents and not for others. The fact that the majority of their
quality lenses are designed

We are comparing Ltds to Nikon's or Canon's lenses with ultrasonic

All FA-J lenses lack an aperture ring. There's 3-4 of that type, some
really low-end zooms and the 18-35.
I'm expecting the Nikon solution. AF-I and AF-S lenses are fully
compatible, they just don't AF on a body that lacks the extra contacts

I agree, although if pentax made optics of comparable image quality, both

Thanks - I forgot about the FA-Js.
I think Pentax have more to lose by introducing lenses that don't
auto-focus with old bodies (especially since I doubt if we'll ever
see another film body from Pentax).
But we'll see - we don't even *know* that the new lenses have USM.

Why?
1. Because you want a bigger buffer than 2 RAW files (Showstopper for me
considering the D's 4 RAW files was a limit I bumped into regularly)
2. You want to shoot with fast glass. The f2.8-4 lens isn't fast enough
for much of my work (I shoot a lot with a 50 at f2 or f1.8)
