Hi, gang
I saw a black cute-looking Canonet going for a song in
a local pwan shop.
Somebody on list with on-hand experience? Some
pictures taken with it to see?
Thanks in advance

It seems to work (speeds sound ok). The battery was
dead so I don't know about the meter. The camera is

I have one. Mine was chrome/black when I got it --
however, now it's all black
except for the lens. I'm pretty confident my paint
job removed most of its
remaining value, but I think it looks better.
I find the lens vignettes
Ok, thanks. Now I'm gettin' hyper enabled.

it's a great camera.
I just picked one up @ a thrift shop (where else!).
The 40/1.7 is sharp and has good color correction.
The battery is needed for the auto exposure and meter.
You can shoot mechanically in manual mode without it.
Instead of the 1.35v mercury battery, go to your local
discounter
it.

I would not trust the auto exposure which is too rough: it is speed
preferred and seems to step using entire F-stops (rough
escapement). The best way to use it is to get to know what are the

The biggest problem you see on old Canonets is that the shutter is
stuck, and the foam seals have turned into goo
Black is rare. I had one way back, I have a chrome one now. The lens in the GIII
is about as good as it gets in these kinds of cameras. Recommendation: buy it.

Oh, yes, it may need the back refoamed. They usually do. Not a major project.

From real world experience I can tell you it does not meter the same with
alkalines as it does with mercury cells
I´d say the Canon´s exposure automation is better - a lot - than the sunny
16 rule - and it is not always sunny - inside a building for example. Better
way to good exposures is to observe what the meter sees and use exposure
lock,
Except on sunny days where F16 rules AFAIK,
you're right. This is
I never liked the feel of the auto aperture in these types of cameras
-- and I've used a couple of examples of the Canonet QL17, the
Olympus 35 RC, the Olympus 35 SP, and even the Konica Auto S3 (though
that one is an aperture priority model that sets the shutter speed
for you).
