The guy was talking about unmodded cameras. No added filters in front of
ccd. Some can focus through an IR filter namely cannon and apperantly
pentax. Most Nikons cannot.

That means he's added the IR filter in front of the CCD, AF is
unaffected by this on a DSLR (not so on a mirrorless)

If they can focus through an IR filter then the focus sensor is IR
He never runs with an IR filter on the lens of his modded camera.
One thing he did say is that some cameras can autofocus through an IR filter,
some cannot. It was Brand dependent.

A guest at the club had a talk about this very subject so will pass one what i
can remember of it.
Apperantly, the sensors are very senative to IR but the camera manufractors put
an IR cut filter in front of the sensor as part of the sensor assembly.
All that is required is to remove that IR cut
James, if you don't put an IR filter on the lens, sensor will grab
both IR and visible wavelength light, won't it?
So if you only want IR, you have to put a filter on the lens anyway,
or am I mistaken ?

IIRC there is also a front or back focus effect from IR because of the
different wavelength so some places recalibrate AF to reflect that
change.

That's correct. Places that convert cameras will also adjust the AF so
it works
You have to take off the IR cut filter, and add clear glass of the
same thickness, otherwise you can't focus properly.
When you are shooting, if you want to only shoot IR, you still need an
IR filter to cut out the visible and UV light. Likewise if you want
to shoot visible, you need a filter
Hey Brian,
I have no idea about Australia, but my local BW printer in Belmont,
Massachusetts (USA) also does IR conversions:

If you e-mail or call for info you'll probably deal with Eric, the
owner. Feel free to let him know Miserere sent you; hopefully

My son is interested in having his old *ist DL converted to IR only (and
one of his mates wants to similarly convert an EOS 400D).
Does anyone know of any company that carries out this type of conversion
(doesn't have to be in Australia).
Cheers
Brian
