Driving to Mexico

I found myself with no other plans and with more than a week free, so I decided to drive south from San Francisco tomorrow. I want to make it to the border and see what's in the north of Mexico. Any recommendations from the group? I was thinking to stay in the mainland--not go to Baja. Maybe
