Short version: You have to install a fresh cartridge (full) the normal way. Then you *manually* slide the cartridge "sled" to the left and install an old, refilled or partially-filled cartridge and manually slide it back to the right. Software will now show it as having the same ink level as the full cartridge you used first. The trick is that, in order to manually slide the cartridge sled over to the left, you have to either remove the top cover of the printer (6 screws) or flip down a little plastic lever that sits just to the left of the ink cartridge when it's in its rest position.
