How Fast is Fast?

Flash Card, for example..40x..80x? Forgetting about the price for the moment, for TIFFs, RAW and 3fps JPG bursts, what is a practical speed?. Is the camera's buffer(?) speed a limiting factor? As you can see, I'm just starting to wake up. Thanks, Jack
