No TTL is normal or course but no A mode is annoying IMO. And it is
designed that way (not defective on that point).
It does have the A mode, but no TTL, and the Operating Manual says it
should have TTL with the Z/PZ series cameras.

You may have intended to respond to a post by someone else, but I had
no specific flash mode problem. The AF540 auto/manual zoom was
inoperative regardless of mode.

I recently purchased the K-10D. My workhorse lens, purchased several
years ago along with a PZ-1P is a Tokina AT-X 287 PRO f/2.8 28-70 mm
zoom. I used an AF-500FTZ flash with the PZ-1P.
When I got my *ist-D, I continued to use this lens and flash combo. I
never had any problem balancing the
