We have a son and his family in Avila Beach, about 15 minutes from SLO.
The Super Bloom of poppies was along CA 138 between I-5 and CA 14. The
amount of color was amazing - hillsides and fields covered in orange
poppies.

While I've seen poppies even somewhat more orange, it's safe to say, that
generally, they are a bit more yellow. These had a glare to them that I knocked
down with the burn tool. I may have liked the richer darkish orange a little

Dan - On the two images you posted, elimination of the background will help. Get in
closer and lower and try a wider lens. In Tulip Fields, the sky is a major
distraction.

I agree Ken. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Cotty. I think that you are right about a wider lens. I have
gotten bad results with wide lenses on archetectural subjects, so I
don't use them as much as I should when I'm travelling.

I understand that. I was just thinking through what I could have or
should have tried to do that day, which was the only day I was at Keukenhof.

Well, Dan, not every day and every situation is going to result in good

After seeing the PAW last week with the wonderful field of poppies, I
went back to some of my attempts to capture similar scenes:

I don't often do a PAW, I think this is my second.

This type of shot (large field of something) is one that I really like
to look at. There are some great elements in this one - the poppies,
the sky, the clump of trees in the background - about the only thing
that doesn't grab at me is the color. Seems just a bit weak (maybe I
have seen too many
Nice, Cotty!
You should see acre after acre of California poppies, when they bloom...
A rich orange, several fields of them is really gorgeous!
Well, you've been here, you know...

couldn't do it better and choice of
wide angle was just right here! In Poland it is rare to see that many
poppies in nature - perhaps because their stalks were used to make heroine
substitute called kompot here a few years ago ;-)

Tilted a little, but nice. We had our season of poppies some months
ago... Oh well, nothing is uniform, climate
