To change the number of pixels per inch in photoshop, open up the Image
Size dialog, uncheck Resample Image, and enter the number of pixels per
inch you want. this will not resize the image, or change anything else about
the image.

When saving a TIFF as a jpeg in photoshop, it reduces the image
from a 17Meg file to about 2.6Meg.
How much loss is there in the printing of the jpeg file?
Probably not much visible. You can control

I have tried the different save modes and still photoshop

Chris,
I've seen the results on two photos done with GF ... they're OK ... I
suppose it depends on the kind of quality you want. Speaking for
myself, nothing beats a higher resolution original. IMO, (which is
usually in the minority here) resampling, in general, lollipops

There is some loss of detail at high magnification, more so on some
images than others. One of the online reviews had some examples.
My question is: Why ever would one buy such an expensive camera, put a
good lens on it, learn to do

You need to resize the image to a more reasonable picture size, withou
resampling..
I guess
72dpi is VGA (640x480)on a 14 monitor. An old old old standard.
It's also the default image resolution for postscript.
Why the heck save to JPEG? Don't all labs print from a TIFF?

Depends on the lab I suppose. We can print from a half dozen different
formats, but anything over about 20mb kaaks the system, so big tiffs
2.5mb. I promise you the quality most definitely DOES suffer...

My guess is to save as jpeg
I don't know, the guy I was answering indicated his lab wantec that.

You might get better results if you took istD raw or tiff files, and, after
working on them, convert to jpeg via photoshop and saving to maximum quality.

My lab uses a Windows operating system.
Totally amateur and obviously inadequate.

That depends on how much memory you have. I regularly work on 125MB
TIFFs (raw 4k ppi scans of 35mm frames).
