That would be my guess. The $600 digital point-and-shoots now have 8x or 10x optical zoom; it's going to be hard to sell DSLRs into that marketplace if all they have to offer is 3x optical. (I think Sony now combine 7x optical with 8x digital for 56x zoom!) More like a consumer DA zoom.
