Welcome to the world of jpeg. Compression varies depending upon the picture.
Large monotone areas compress more than areas with a lot of small detail. If you
compare the photos to their compressed sizes you will see what I mean.

Jpg compression varies depending on the content of the picture. Lots of
areas of continuous tone compress far better than something with lots of
detail or lots of grain/noise for example. The camera doesn't know in
advance how small it will be able to make the files, so assumes that
they will

But, that doesn't address his question, which asks why the total number

He took 57 shots, up- or downloaded them to his computer and now his
folder contains 101 images.
Where did the extra images come from?

No, he told the camera 'supposed' to have capacity for storing 57 shots,
then it actually stored 101 pix. It happened to me too, with different
cards, different figures and more or less same 1:2 ratio between calculated
pictures and true capacity.

Well if you can vouch for all the pictures, what's the problem? :-)
The predicted capacity of 57 shots is assuming that all the pics will be
full size.
Check the total number of megabytes for all the images. If it's more than
256 Mb, I'm at loss...

JPEG compression is not, to my understanding, a static thing. For instance a
image with a large expanse of sky should save smaller then an image with
lots of fine detail
Okay, but...
A saved size of 17.3 MB sounds like it didn't save in .jpg but RAW!
Does Photoshop do something to an imported image that would account for
that massive increase in file size?
The poster said the file size of each downloaded and saved image file, I
assume on his computer, was between
