So, I tried using the brush tool to paint in the tripod head so that
Photoshop had a blank slate to work with and that seemed to work better.
Thanks Bill I did that but all it gave me were different versions of the
tripod head, I ll try it with a loser grab, i did have some success with
the remove tool

so, it looks like I may have been trying to do this with the wrong tools,
saw a video on the removal tool which worked on my example photo.

I opened the image in Photoshop, drew quite loosely around the tripod
head with the lasso tool, then edit/generative fill and clicked fill
with nothing in the dialogue box.
If you do too tight a selection Photoshop will screw it up, it needs
surrounding detail to create the fill so you need to
