Re: DA*16-50mm/2.8 and FA28-70mm/2.8

2016-05-26 Thread Stanley Halpin
I had the 16-50 and enjoyed it. I Enjoy using primes more, and have 15, 21, 35,
and 50mm lenses that cover that range adequately. But I never had any quality
or mechanical issues with the lens.

I have never had the 28-70 so can’t do any sort of comparison. However, as I
recall the 28-70 had the reputation of being a very sharp lens that had a fatal
construction flaw; one of the lens elements would delaminate. If you believe
the stories, it was not a question of whether your copy of the lens was going
to delaminate, rather it was a question of when.

I was wandering through eBay recently and noticed a 28-70 for sale at a very
reasonable price. In the fine print the seller noted that they had not gotten
the sharp images from the lens that they expected and thought maybe one lens
element was out of alignment. I think they had one of the infamous cases of
delimitation. For which, AFIK, there is no cure.

Re: GESO: Pics from BluesQuake

2016-05-26 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Nicole,

I enjoyed looking at this series.
The first thought that popped up in my mind after looking at these photos
was the same as what I've written about your previous series from a dance
event: I enjoy the way you are framing these photos.
Having seen tons of dance-event photos, I think it is one of the
main things that make such photos interesting and powerful.

From that perspective, I'd say that lack of focus on the guy in
NAJ54780.jpg makes it not as strong. In a similar way,
having a deeper DOF in NAJ54762.jpg, so that the woman were also in
focus would be great, but I understand that you were shooting at f/1.4 due
to the low light. (And the guy's facial expression is not exactly
inspiring/-ed.)
Also, I am not sure if this photo is as interesting as the rest:
NAJ54533.jpg .
I think the rest of the photos are much stronger, so you might
consider just skipping these three.

PS. I thought you should've posted the masterpiece photo not at the
end of the other thread where some people might just skip it, but either
in this message, or yet separately!

I am talking about this one: https://flic.kr/p/HuH1up

Cheers!

Igor

A small gallery. only 3 images.

Our hotel in Athens had an interesting stairwell opposite the elevators. I
liked the geometry and the repetition. I'm not sure whether I want to make
it mor of an abstract or an archetectrual documentary.

Here is what I have so far:

Thanks for looking, and thnks in advance for any comments, criticisms or

Yes, the very low light conditions meant I had to shoot at f/1.4 and hope.
Thank you for the feedback on the photos — selecting/pruning down photos is
something I struggle with, and I really appreciate getting your opinion as well
as the rationale behind it. I really wish the guy in NAJ54762 had a more
interesting expression — ah, well, perhaps I selected it for the photo I hoped
for. I kinda like 54533, but I have to agree with you on 54780 — I wish the
focus was reversed.

Good point, so I did a separate PESO. He thinks about the K1 24/7. When he

Good point, so I did a separate PESO. He thinks about the K1 24/7.
When he finally gets one, I’m not sure he’ll know what to spend his time
thinking about.

That "K1 24/7" - got me thinking for a moment: "What is that very exotic
lens?.."

The next step after K1 will be 15-30/2.8 (unless Sigma will come out with
a FF version of 15-30/1.8).

There is always some new fetish!.. ;-)

Cheers,

Igor

On a separate note, I need to check that lens, it wasn’t focusing well
at all...

I've been less then completely happy with FA 50/1.4 + K-7 & K-5 IIs
while shooting dances in low light @ f/1.4. I've even had the lens checked
by the Pentax repair master.
I like the performance of 35/1.8 and 77/1.8 (Limiteds) under the same
conditions much-much better.

I can vouch for that, I had an early 28-70 f4.0 that did just that. It
appears that it was a composite molded plastic and glass aspherical

seems to be holding together, though it's construction is well
plastic-ey. Sadly the plastic fantastic FA zooms don't seem to wear

OT - Lots of water and tornado touchdown

2016-05-26 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I know that some PDMLers are interested in various severe weather events.
I am not sure if this made the national news yet...

Torrential downpour (do not mix with torrent download! ;-)) is not rare in
this part of Texas. Large portions of Houston and Dallas have been
severely flooded several times over the past year.
College Station and Bryan had not suffered as much. But today's weather
was rather severe. Two tornado warnings with one touchdown less then 8
miles from our home ...

And flash flooding ...

This short news video shows the amount of water running through some major
roads:

http://www.khou.com/weather/possible-tornado-hits-bryancollege-station-area/216188498

And there are some photos of the tornado aftermath:
http://www.theeagle.com/gallery/photo-gallery-severe-weather-in-the-brazos-valley/collection_8499ca26-2377-11e6-8b3d-bbaec356ba8d.html
and more (below the several embedded videos) of both
water and tornado effects:
