First guess would be a lucky shot. In his collection I see many more
damselflies posing in groups. He must have found a way to enforce lucky
shots...

Re: Small sensors are better than you think

2021-11-08 Thread Darren Addy
If I may return to the subject of the subject line, there is another use
for small sensors:

“ But the Pentax Q

their tiny sensors are at their Best for *Long Reach* Astro-Photography
Why ?
Simply because thousands of Deep Sky Small Objects will Never fill an APS-C
sensor !
Even mounted on a very affordable SkyWatcher 1000mm Newtonian !
+ these tiny sensors are Very Sensitive ~ DxO *ISO 5680* FF-Equivalent for
the 1/2.3" in the Pentax Q
, Q10
 !”

Geo444 has great posts in that thread.

I might ad the smaller/lighter body is a good match for the Meade ETX
90/105/125 at prime focus. I’ve got an opportunity to get a Pentax Q-S1 for
$40 (no chargers) 5-15mm zoom & might snag it for that low $$.

PESO - Lunasea

2021-11-08 Thread Rick Womer
Presenting the 73 meter / 240 foot yacht Lunasea, in her berth in San Diego.
Its owner is Yahn Bernier, software developer and Ferrari driver, whose net
worth is in the $500-900 million range. It carries 12 passengers and a crew of
20.

I don’t know how many bananas it can carry.

Re: GESO - Bedford PA

2021-11-08 Thread Rick Womer
Mark, the name of the town rang a bell. It’s 3-4 hours from Philly. My parents
lived outside Cleveland the first few years we were in Philly, and we made
quick stops in Bedford a couple of times.

My favorites are the Union Hotel (the modern car in front is a wonderful
anachronism); the quill pens in the window; and the barrels. They’re all very
nicely done….

and with FILM! My goodness.

(Still have my Super Program around here someplace…)

Re: PESO - Yes, We Have (some) Bananas

Interesting shot and write up. I never thought much about container
ships till recently.

Only about 60 million of them in this load, though.

Our San Diego hotel sits between the Convention Center (and a harborfull of
billionaires’ yachts), and the 20-acre terminal of the Dole Fruit Company. From
our hotel window we could watch the activity there.

Sniffing around the web, I learned that San Diego is Dole's largest terminal,
with four smaller ones on the Gulf and East coasts. Dole owns about 20
refrigerated container ships (each container has its own chiller, using power
from the ship); each ship carries about 300 containers. Most carry bananas,
while others carry pineapples. Other fruit companies lease container space and
ships rather than owning a fleet.

These are unusual for container ships, because they have their own cranes
(Central American port facilities are apparently not relaible that way). This
ship was unloading containers with the front crane at the same time as the rear
crane was loading empties.

More that you ever wanted to know, right? I think I’ll have a banana with my
tea…

The way things have been going for me lately I’m glad that it hasn’t gotten to
