As best I can tell that announcement was specifically talking about the
Japanese market.

More than anything else this sounds a lot like the way computers are sold.
Sure, I could go to a variety of stores (online or physical) and buy an
off-the-shelf computer, but I've hardly ever actually done that (the exception
being a couple of ready-built systems I picked up from Tiger Direct at
clearance prices). Most of the time I've gone to the manufacturer's web site
(Gateway 2000, HP, Dell, ...), configured the system there, and had them ship
it to me.

While cameras today aren't as configurable as computers have been for the last
few decades, there have been some options (a couple of variants of an otherwise
identical camera). And as we see every time a new body is rumoured to be
forthcoming, we get people posting saying what the camera must have to make it
desirable as far as they are concerned. If Ricoh could actually offer a system
where a camera body could be configured in a variety of ways (anti-aliasing
and/or IR filters, sensor dimensions, pixel count, flip-out screen, screw drive
focussing, power zoom, fastest shutter speed, ...) might they be able to do
that and still keep the price reasonable? I don't know.

Re: PESOx2: Ultra Colonisation

2022-01-20 Thread Alan C
Thanks Larry. The photography is not very good - I was just trying to
tell a story. There are actually 5 species of yellow weavers with black
faces (Ploecus spp.) - the (Southern) Masked, the Lesser Masked, the
Village (formerly Spotted-Backed), the Spectacled & the Cape (which does
not occur in the Lowveld). The females are more drab in colour. Apart
from the Spectacled which is more solitary, they all build nests in
colonies. The species may also be identified by the structures of their
nests, mostly the length of the tunnel at he entrance. Those nests are
about 50m from the road so I will need to go back with my 500mm Sigma to
be sure but on zooming they look like Lesser or Village Weaver nests.
They are parasitised by small Cuckoos, notably the Diederick & Klaus
Cuckoos. I have witnessed this a few times - the whole process takes
only about 10 seconds with the birds in the colony kicking up a hell of
a racket until the Cuckoo has left. There are several other differently
coloured "weaver" species too. There has been a big renaming project of
Southern African birds in the past few years because they had different
names in different countries - they decided on the oldest name. IMHO,
some of the "new" names are stupid but we will just have to get used to
them. The Afrikaans names which are in common use have not changed!

Australia may have been a testbed of sorts, there's now virtually no
Pentax to be seen at bricks mortar stores or their on-lline portals.
For some years they have been selling direct and they have an agent on
eBay that often undercuts the buy price of retailers (product is
direct shipped from the importers CRK). As a consequence they have
largely faded into obscurity here.

Hi Larry,

Yes it wasn't the day I would have picked, some colour in the sky
would have been nice but I had been putting off the shoot due to rain
and that was my best weather window in the allotted delivery time.

You were pretty close, the sidewalk extends into the street a little
at that point, you can see the spot here:

As of April 1, 2022 (no fooling) Ricoh will stop selling Pentax and GR
branded cameras through the distribution network and will only sell through
their own website and branded stores.

Meanwhile Petapixel had a review of the 21/2.4 saying it’s a great lens,

A company can't just "get someone" to sell its products. It has to
actively promote the products and develop partnerships with retailers and
distributors. Ricoh does that with copiers; why can't it do that with its

The first image is a heavy crop of a full Sable Dam I took on Dec 24th.
Note the tree at the back overhanging the water. Now, scroll 5 L for
another shot taken on Jan 15th. In a mere 3 weeks a flock of Masked
Weavers has managed to construct a huge colony. An amazing achievement
for such small creatures. That's real productivity!

I agree with Paul that it is very striking—I particularly like the lighting,
the colors in the building (including the umbrellas), and the sky.

I find the scalloping along the left top and the irregular sides distracting,
though, and think it would look better cropped at the sides.

PESO The Rocks

2022-01-20 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Team,

I was in the city shooting façades for a client last month and I took
the opportunity to grab a quick shot for myself (have hardly shot
anything for myself in the last two years).

The image was shot using my pano head with the vertical angle set to
optimise the balance between the road and the tops of the buildings.
It's a 3 shot x 12 HDR sequence, all assembled in LR using the HDR
panorama option. I then used the guided transform tool to set my main
verticals and rotation.

I had a cut down kit with me which meant that I had to set the tripod
level by adjusting the leg lengths so it's not quite right, I left the
image uncropped to display the overlap/stitching (and my levelling
error).

Re: PESO - PanESO - Grand Teton

2022-01-20 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Igor,

I'm not sure that PS has the same size limitations as LR, the way LR
works is it produces a composite DNG so I think that the issue is
mainly a limit on the RAW/DNG engine (one of my friends is on the LR
dev team so I will ask out of interest). Pano prints are amazing :)

I think my images are hidden from the public, I have to share a direct
link for them to be visible.

I have a pano head but if I'm shooting hand held or just off a
conventional head I tend to overlap by 50%. This typically makes it
easy for the stitcher and it's easy to set by eye, you just place what
was at the edge of the frame in the centre on the subsequent exposure.

Cheers,

Rob
