Nice to see you back, Marco!
These are very nice shots.
I am constantly amazed at the quality coming out of the tiny lens and sensor on
modern phones, I've used mine exclusively for on-line sales images, and to add
to requests for a quote for renovations recently.

Good eye. Yeah, on a few of them I was trying out the "add grain" function.
Seemed like it might work with the high contrast aesthetic.

I often printed film shots at a high contrast  so these don't need any

Those blue speckles puzzle me, because they look like the noise I got with my

Quite.

As I mentioned, I was interested to compare modern technology to
what I was able to do twenty+ years ago.

I managed to dig out one of the images from 2000. This will have
been taken on my PZ-1p. I'm pretty sure I was using my A* 300/2.8,
probably shooting 1600 ASA Fuji slide film.

After some playing around in PhotoShop, I came up with this:

(for reference, here's the 2023 phone image again):

I could improve the old image some more by smoothing out the blue
speckles in the darkest parts, and losing a few unwanted highlights,
but it doesn't look too bad. The phone image is better, though.
(And, in all fairness, the stage lighting is much better in 2023).

As to the question as to why we bother with cameras - in my case it
is because there are some things my current camera can do quite a bit
better than I can - things like keeping the driver of a fast-moving
car in focus, rather than focussing on some other part of the car.
It's also rather better than my phone at longer focal lengths ...

One advantage of living on Highway 9, the main thoroughfare of SLV is that
repairs to the road, power, or comm are prioritized. Unfortunately, there was
so much damage to so many roads on Tuesday that I had many friends who couldn’t
get home. Several towns were cut off.

My neighbor (the one whose house caught the tree last week) called me Tuesday
afternoon and said that he couldn’t get home. They had stopped him just before
the fallen tree, he tried to go around the other way, but those roads were
closed due to fallen trees as well. I told him about the trail from the road
just before where the road block was to the bridge past our houses, and when he
called to tell me that he was able to get home, I told my boss I was leaving
work while I knew that I could still probably get home.

I parked my car at the church, just before the closure and discretely walked
past the person watching the road closure. I figured that if I couldn’t get
past on the road, I could do the trail, but it was dark, muddy and I didn’t
have a good flashlight. I’d gotten 10-20 yards past her when she called out at
me and said I couldn’t go. I said I lived just around the corner, and she said
she’d walk me there.

As I mentioned earlier, before taking photos I grabbed my hard hat and high-viz
vest. About the time I was finishing up, she had just walked someone past,
came up to me and asked if I knew who was in charge.

Most of the advances in phone cameras are in the field of computational
photography. They’ll basically take a short video, then combine the photos,
throw a bunch of DSP at it etc.

If the computational aspect could be applied to DSLR sized sensors the results
would be mindblowing.

have added photos to the album twice without realizing it.

On the list of things that went wrong in the past month, it's pretty minor

I also learned that if you put on a hard hat and a high visibility vest
people are a lot more likely to assume that you’re supposed to be where
they chewed you out for being a couple of hours previously.

Re: A chance to play with my new toys

2023-03-23 Thread ann sanfedele
what a nightmare... and it doesn't look like you are getting any relief
too soon.  at least you have a new toy.

BTW, when I look at your photos from your phone Google shows me two of
every frame... maybe you playing with exposures with difference my eyes
can't see ?  also, even though I'm in dark mode on Google when I go to
the photos the background is white.  Google sucks a lot sometimes
