Re: TA
As many have mentioned, this is one of the most interesting threads for a while and I'm glad Frank brought it up. My initial reaction was, photography is inherently sexual when pointed at people. How can it not be when it is a single image focused on a subject. It wants me to look and I love that. But I thought about it some more What I admire about Frank's photographs (and not only his, many others on PDML) is the humanising aspect of them. Those couriers taking risks in traffic, a blur that you try to avoid - he shows them après-couriering. Their bravado and frankly, well-toned bodies, are something to admire. That isn't sexualising. I am admiring their life force So too with Alina. She is no more a object in front of Bruce's camera than Frank's buddies. When she throws in a gorgeous handstand and writes about herself in such a positive way, you know it is that she is as much co-creator as Bruce, with his consumate command of his skills. Do I think my photos are objectifying? Perhaps. I never really know these people anywhere like Frank or Bruce. Sometimes, rarely, I have a chat. Mostly it is about the pleasure of observation. Which is why I steered my blurb along this theme of a brief connection. They are no longer just elements in a composition. Wide lens, 2m or less, and I can't help but feel a jolt when they make eye contact. Such a thrilling moment. I really can't pull back from the shot thinking about rules or balance when the chance presents itself, and really couldn't shoot any other way. -- der...@iinet.net.au http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Eye contact
Thanks for having a look and especially the criticisms. It is really interesting when you put two photos side by side. If they are too similar, you think why am I seeing two when one will say just as much. If you see two dissimilar photos you think what is the link between the two, when there might not be. Its a fine line and a distraction if not done well. So the singles layout gave things a bit of tolerance. Good enough for Robert Frank and Walker Evans, good enough for me. I might put in some discreet titling though. Igor, you pointed out a few of those weaker shots. Made me think On 28/11/2013 9:04 AM, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: Nicely done photos, sir! Re: GESO - The Apple Don't Fall Far from the Tree
I hear ya, Igor. One of the reasons why I've been shooting music less and less is the restriction of lighting and position. The Vanguard is a narrow venue with dining tables up the front. Punters pay good money to get a good view, so getting in the way taking the shot would not be taken well. I followed the first three songs, no flash rule, and then went back to the bar to enjoy the music. thanks for looking On 16/08/2013 9:02 AM, Igor Roshchin wrote: First, I thought Apple doesn't fall as far as NASDAQ. :-) If I may, - a few comments. It's a fun gallery, but I think it is not as spectacular as your typical GESOs. I can tell that the light conditions were harsh, and you had to work with what's available. But the first thing that came to my mind is how the shots were framed. I assume you were shooting in the open (not from the hip). - In that case, I would have done the framing rather differently on several photos (e.g. #5, 7, 8, 10, 15). Those are either too much shifted to one side (to my liking), or include extraneous subjects that could be avoided if slightly reframed. On the shot #6 I would try to avoid the slight overlap with the water bottles by moving slightly, probably forward and to the right (while keeping the monitor speaker off the feet on the either side). Re: First experiments with IR adapted K-5
Larry, the dance shots are great, your camera and no-light settings are perfect. The sushi shots, on the other hand, not so appertising IR block filters are easy to come by, just ask your friendly Leica pusher. Not cheap, but easy. Ahem On 11/08/2013 8:22 AM, Larry Colen wrote: Cutting to the chase: A friend and I went out for sushi before going dancing. There are some strong artistic limitations to IR photography, the set also includes a couple randoms from the afternoon: http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157635017858426/ This set was shot at Friday Night Blues. The thing that got me into IR in the first place was being able to use a flash without blinding people, each shot is processed in both color and BW: http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157635011398151/ I got my K-5 back from Pro Camera Repair yesterday. They repaired the broken sensor, and converted it to (full spectrum) IR for $350, which is about $100 less than CRIS wanted to just repair it. Most of my photos in the afternoon/evening were just of random things, because I had no idea how anything would turn out. I snuck out of the office, and ran down to San Jose camera. They had a 77mm, Hoya IR filter for $109, which is about what BH charges. Meanwhile Keeble and Schuchat wanted something like $240 for a 77mm IR filter. Neither one had a 49mm filter. I haven't been able to find a good source on an IR block filter, to convert the camera back to visible only. Comments, suggestions, feedback and ideas for processing are appreciated on these photos. They are *very* experimental, it is almost like learning photography all over again. Some observations and notes: 1) In camera exposure metering is very unpredictable. I suspect that the metering also has IR filters over it, which weren't removed, so there is a strong disconnect between what the metering sees and what the meter sees. 2) For autofocus: If you are shooting in IR, use IR lights and live view, or stop things down more. Autofocus (on a full spectrum) is calibrated for visible light, not IR. 3) If you get a full spectrum camera, budget a few hundred dollars for IR block and visible block filters for both primes (49mm ish) and Zooms (77mm ish). 4) The color adjustment in LR doesn't go far enough, in either temperature or tint. I will eventually experiment with two pass color correction, exporting the file to DNG or TIFF, then running it through again. 5) Accept the fact that photos will look weird. Don't fight it, go with it, and figure out ways to make that weirdness work. 6) When things do correct to closer to natural lighting, they'll end up kind of flat and pastel in shading. 7) For working with IR, you really want a camera that works well in Live View mode. You really want to see what the camera will be seeing. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESOs - 3 new ones with the K-5 and MANUAL lens
I set my lens on 2m and position myself at said distance to take a shot for wide-ish lenses. If I'm doing a longer lens like a 50, I might be 3 or 4m. Well, this particular night, they were both drunk, and David decided it was time to let Glenn know who the bull of the herd is. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/8757901365/ K-5, F 50/1.7, f/3.2, ISO 3200, 1/100 sec They go through this little ritual on a fairly regular basis and it makes for some pretty long nights at work sometimes. -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Thanks Rob, Bruce and Ann The one on the left is http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/gallery/images/2012_06_02_IGP4260.jpg and the one on the right... http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/gallery/images/2011_01_14P1050413.jpg originally, they were supposed to be the other way around. Re: In praise of the K5's sensor
Haha, that's great. Fake Mick is in his puffy shirt, and Fake Dave is in his presumably swishy coat. I remember thinking how daggy it was when it came on Live Aid. No bright colored sparkles of noise, just a nice smooth film grain look. It's really great to be able to pull actual details out of the shadows!
