Drove up into Michigan's thumb this morning to shoot a car but had to stop for
this one. The thum, as it's called is a peninsula in Lake Huron that looks
like the thumb on the mitten that is Michigan. It's very rural and sparsely
populated, but quite nice in a very rural way. Anyway, someone wants us to make
an offer.

I was photographing some friends playing in a bar tonight, and decided to see
how the K-5 would do with the 18-250. In order to shoot Livia at 250mmm, 1/40
Sec and f/6.3 I had to crank the ISO up to 12,800. I'm fairly happy with the
photograph but close to ecstatic to see what the K-5 can do under these
conditions:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6007734165/in/set-72157627353833070/

If you're curious about the rest of the set:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157627353833070/

I forgot my bag of light modifiers at home. I tried making a snoot for the 540
out of a ricola bag, but it didn't work so well, so most of these are ambient
light.

It's the same as all the Pentax 50mm f1.4 lenses but in FA livery,
(Ok, so they were supposedly tweeked, and they have the best coatings
Pentax put in the focal length). I've been looking for nice short
portrait tele for the K20d that takes full advantage of the
automation. The f1.4's aren't perfect but they're more than good
 enough. I find that I don't end up using the M50 f1.4 on the K20d, I
used to use it a lot on the D and Ds.
It's still a current lens, too:

That price is about 2.5 times as high as when I bought mine new, when
was it, 3 or 4 years ago? Around that time used specimens would
typically fetch a lot more than the new price on eBay because everyone
thought it was discontinued, and hard to find...

To all our British PDMLers: Check this out: Vivian Maier is by you
 guys!

 http://londonstreetphotographyfestival.org/diary/vivian-maier-a-life-
 uncovered

P.S. How about a report for the list from one of you guys!?!

Chris couldn't make it yesterday, so I went to the exhibition today because
I had something else to do in that area.

The exhibition space is really good. It's some sort of Victorian railway
building that's been converted as part of the enormous regeneration taking
place around Kings Cross St. Pancras. There is an architect's model of the
whole site on the ground floor of the exhibition building.

The exhibition itself is quite small and I thought the pictures were rather
variable, from superb to meh. Many of them are top class, whatever the back
story, but I made an effort to evaluate them without the back story
influencing me, trying to think If I saw this without knowing who took it,
what would be my reaction?. Meh, in a few cases.

The good ones, however, are great and I look forward to seeing many more as
the backlog is whittled away. It's a great shame though that Maier was not
in contact with other street photographers of the time. If her pictures had
been known in the 1950s she would stand alongside some of the top names from
that school, but now she can only be a footnote and a curiosity. The
influence of that school of photography has already been made, and I don't
think she will go on to influence anyone significant, expect perhaps to
learn more about the Chicago influence on street photography.

The exhibition is part of London Street Photography week. After it I went to
London's former Little Italy, which is centred round the church of San
Pietro. Today is when they have their annual procession, which I'd never
heard of until a few weeks ago, so I went along to photograph it. Lots of
street photographers had obviously had the same idea because I saw many of
the same faces I'd seen earlier at the Maier show. I'll post some photos of
the procession later.

sees Pentax marketing helping them, they've been badly misinformed.

Ricoh camera division exited the USA about 12 years ago. They returned
in small volume distribution just recently, although they've been
successful with their high-end compact niche all along. They've
existed in the USA on private, independent imports through particular
suppliers .. and enough of them that the enthusiast community hasn't
forgotten them. So you wouldn't see many of them in stores just yet.

I'm pretty sure the Pentax acquisition is in good part a USA reentry
strategy. It nets them the Pentax USA distribution network as well as
the brand name and assorted technologies. The Pentax distribution
network, small and potentially weak as it might be, is a heck of a lot
better than no distribution network at all.

For a number of reasons, I know what Godfrey said is correct.

I also look forward to the push from a company that realises its need
for better marketing and is taking steps to achieve that. I think we
all feel Pentax has never tried to market itself in the US (in recent
decades), and this might be about to change...or not. We'll see.

Let's reconvene this meeting in a year.

Hi gang!

Our neighbor, John Whitehead, is a photographer for the Harrisburg
Patriot News. He came over this afternoon asking if he could take
some pictures of me right away riding the motorcycle for an article
about some motorcycle sales legislation. I said sure, suited up and
met him a few blocks from the house. We spent about 15 minutes taking
pictures, waiting for traffic to clear, taking pictures, waiting for
the dog walkers to get past, etc. A half-hour later this was on their
site:

My photo is just below the text of the article. Fun times!

I guess I count this a kind of a failure.

The band broke into a pseudo reggae beat, and the woman gave into the
moment...

1.) I couldn't decide who should be the main subject, so I split the
difference. (You'll have to admit the gentleman's knee is in perfect
focus).

2.) The man's focus was more obviously on the woman's assets a moment I
missed while I dithered with adjusting focus.

3.) I didn't notice the even more random strangers head in the bottom
left corner of the photo.

Oh well. So here's

Just as the role of women at Valley Forge is often understated, so,
too, is the role of people from other nations in the survival and
ultimate success of the American Revolution often understated or
simply ignored.

At a time when we are trying to think through our immigration
predicament, it is useful to remember that, without foreign help and
foreigners themselves coming to Washington's assistance, we might
never have won the war with Great Britain.

As we deal with immigration issues, it is helpful for our congressmen
to ... realize just how vital foreigners have been in the making of
America.

because we're afraid of looking like this:

Despite any super powers Captain Canada has, he still takes public

Canada Day.

Hope you enjoy. Comments really aren't necessary (but will be read anyway).

Re: Is Ricoh Going to Buy Pentax????????

This question is just too subjective. I'm happy with the Olympus VF-2, but it's
still different from an optical finder. Evidently, the hybrid in the X100 won't
easily adapt to interchangeable lenses. For me, the smaller size is worth the
use of EVF.

 I'm somewhat hopeful about
 this.  The traditional digital market
(How's that, huh) of PS and DSLRs is being eroded in
 two ways:
cellphones will increasingly replace the PS and
 mirrorless will cut
into the DSLRs.  Ricoh and Pentax could make a pretty
 good mirrorless
 body with Pentax optics.

The new Pens look very good, but it's the lens announcements that
pique my interest. Fast 12 and 45 mm, add the new Summilux 25mm from
Panasonic, and they now have my preferred lens kit in hand. All they
need beyond that, in addition to the existing FT/mFT macro lenses, is
a fast 85mm ... for me, anyway.

I fully expect the next pro-grade body from Olympus following the E-5
to be 100% compatible with Micro-FourThirds lenses as well as
FourThirds SLR lenses. That will most likely have built-in an even
better EVF than the current Olympus VF-2 option. That's what I'm
waiting for before doing any expansion of my Olympus system gear.

Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr, and
 maybe a K5 update later...

But how many times I heard this from friends... countless.

Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio photography.

I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a friend of
mine directed me to his page. (FYI:
 http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ )

So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough for
studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already reached
his level and you feel it's not enough for you?

Obviously... the answer is no :D

But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love Sony's
new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and most
importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no.

But which other company offers you the possibility to try the
astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so comfortable
that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make the use of the
 camera comfortable?

But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the 3rd
party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of the main
concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with Pentax :)

So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a bit
more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good partner for my
 photography needs.

Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read so many
rants then why not a praise? :)

and stick with banners exclusively, although banners don't generate as many
hits as pop-ups, so most websites now employ pop-ups.
 Paul

Just what are non-members seeing on Flickr that members aren't? Has
anybody ~really~ tested it or are they just guessing and assuming?

To test Paul's claim I walked over to my son's computer and viewed my
Flickr photostream. My son isn't a Flickr member, and I never use his
computer so it doesn't have any cookies for Flickr or Yahoo that would
give him members privileges. Neither my computer's nor my son's have
any ad-blocking software at work. Flash and Java are enabled for us
both.

The pages I saw were ~absolutely~ 100 percent identical to the pages I
see on my own computers. Every part of the page layout was the same
down to the smallest detail, including the single ad panel below and
to the right of the display picture.

Then I viewed Godfrey's photostream at my son's computer. No ads at
all, just as it should be because Godfrey is a paid subscriber. On
Flickr that doesn't just mean no ads for Godder's eyes, it also means
no ads for his viewers. Not even paid subscribers to photo.net can
make that claim.

I can't imagine what some people are seeing that makes them believe
Flickr is as bad as photo.net. Flickr advertising is smaller and less
prominently placed than photo.net ads. There is only one ad on the
standard Flickr photo page against three ads on a standard photo.net
photo page. Other Flickr display pages such as Lightbox or All
Sizes don't have ads.

If you choose the first link that Godfrey always supplies you'll get a
Lightbox page so you won't need to bitch about any perceived Flickr
crapulence. For my part I'll tell you which is the clean page when
I supply links.

I reckon people hate Flickr because they've just gotta hate something,
and there's no Mac vs PC debate going on today.

43 system and m43 system cameras with adapters are the only ones I know

They preform rather well, flare wise, for optics with minimal coatings.

not worth too much effort trying to find a body to use the lenses with.

So, does this mean I should hold off on my plans to get the K3 (or
whatever it's going to be called) once it comes out?

From: Godfrey DiGiorgi

The plenoptic concept is making the rounds today. At least 14 people
have sent me notes about it. I've been tracking this technology from
the first discussions and talks about it in 2006ish, IIRC.

The idea is simple: Instead of capturing only spatial information from
the incoming light, capture the vector information as well. That
allows for in-process focus adjustment and more sophisticated image
correction processing. It's not 3D or holography, it's more
information with which to focus and render the image.

The downside of this is all technical. You generally need about 10x as
many photo receptors to produce a given number of finished image
pixels ... so a 12 Mpixel image relies on having somewhere around
120-144 million photosites behind them to capture both spatial and
vector data. Similarly, the image processing and data handling systems
have to be suitably robust to handle that amount of incoming data...

It's interesting, but I think that the big news is that some money is
being handed to Ted Ng now to develop his prototypes into a viable
production camera. The technology curve is catching up to the needs of
this kind of capture and processing, so a new game in photography
could happen in the near future.

 G'day all

Only one submission so far for the July theme - 'Strange'.

I can't believe that nothing strange is happening within reach of your
 cameras!

Cut off date for submissions is 30 June.

 Submit here:

 http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

 Submission Guidelines here:

 http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

 The main requirements are:

 * Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
 * Max file size: 300k
 * Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or
 lens used is Pentax.

Also - as not all browsers are colour space aware, if you embed a colour
space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure the image looks right on
line. I usually check the colour space of submitted images but I've
 been known to forget.

 Cheers

On my drive home from San Luis Obispo today, I had the crazy idea that for the
price of a medium format camera, you could make a bracket that would securely
hold four (or more) relatively inexpensive DSLRs, with identical(*) decent
lenses, trigger them simultaneously, and use software to combine the images
into one extremely high resolution, or high dynamic range, image. This would
have the advantage of all of the shots being taken at the same time, and for
landscape photos, the parallax difference would likely be negligible.

I'm curious of any one knows of any work along these lines... stitching images
from multiple cameras, taken at the same time, rather than a single camera
taken over a longer span of time.

I hate that.

Maybe they could make it a law requiring cyclists to have a playing card
sticking into the spokes. That way you could at least hear them coming
up behind you.

The bike lanes are useful for , at the very least, if people stay in
them warning we who neither drive or ride bikes
that a bike might be coming down the lane. But you still have to look
 _both_ ways.

at first I thought it was a bad idea too... but it really is working in
 my neighborhood.

In the best of all possible worlds in Manhattan, all private cars would
be banned just busses , necessary business deliveries and
 bikes and trikes and pedestrians.

Or do like the old sci-fi stories predicted and segregate the commercial
delivery truck traffic off into underground tunnels; something like what
Underground Atlanta started out as.

The holier than thou attitude of some riders in New York and being
yelled at by a twenty year old on a bike to get out of the way
when I'm crossing the street with the light and he is running it ain't
 so much fun.

Hi,

I had a very nice walk this Sunday at Brick Lane, London and made a little
candid shot of a guy having a bit of break.

Now the way I had to photo him was a bit funny as when I first stopped next
to him he was looking at me a bit unfriendly (at least that's how I felt).
So I started taking pictures at the area (signs, this and that... whatever
:D) and once he got familiar with me standing near and taking pictures he
just started to act 'normal' again... so I grabbed the opportunity and took
the picture. I've got this little tip (or trick) from DigitalRev TV on
Youtube and I have to say it really works :)

Well cut a long story short, the picture:
http://15kb.posterous.com/a-little-pause

The reason why I am posting the picture because I've posted it on a
hungarian forum and I got a nice e-bashing (well quite what I've expected
from my fellow hungarians :D) yet I really like this picture post processed
this way. (The picture was taken with Pentax K10D + Jupiter f2/85mm, no
flash)

What's your opinion?

All the best,
.t

Isn't it about time for the rumors about the K5 replacement to start
appearing? The K10 had a production run of 2 years but the K20 and K7
only ran for 1 year before being replaced. On that record the K3 (?)
should be appearing soon - or at least start being talked about.

I keep looking at the K5's low light performance (the only thing I'm
not happy with in the K7). And then I think the next model should be
even better, but I hate waiting.

So where are the rumors about the next camera. What are the must have
features that will sell it? Or are we reaching the point where
advancement is slowing simply because technology can't keep up?

I'm sure this august rabble, even the actual professionals, won't
object to me cackling in that glee experienced when our hobby
unexpectedly leads to a check arriving in the mail. Anyhow, I sold
 the picture at
 http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/201x/2011/02/26/-big/IMG_0462.jpg.html
to a Professor of Patristic Theology at Cambridge University for use
on the cover of a book to be entitled The Architecture of Theology:
Structure, System and Ratio. Going to be a hot seller, I'm sure.

BTW, she found it because I put the pic in a Wikipedia article.

Also interesting: I shot it with my Canon S90 because the big Pentax
 was out of juice.

They must have hacked the hotshoe interface to handle serial I/O from the

have added the GPS as a serial device distinct from a flash. Clever! I don't
recall any of us coming up with that solution.

 A mere $249 US.

Hmm, thanks, something I would like even at that price but really does
it have to be quite this big?

Subject: idea for a pdml photography project

Hi Everyone:

I just finished F. Jack Hurley's book, Portrait of a Decade: Roy Stryker
and the Development of Documentary Photography in the Thirties. Many of you
have probably read this, but if not, you should be able to find it in your
local library or secure a used copy via bookfinder or amazon.

At 175 pages, the book provides a nice broad look at Roy Stryker's life, his
years studying and teaching economics, his working relationship with Rexford
Tugwell, and, of course, his leadership at the Farm Security Administration
(FSA). All fascinating stuff! You won't be disappointed--I promise!

The book has inspired an idea that might be of interest to PDML list
members. In 1936, Stryker began to broaden the FSA projects to include
photographic documentation or rural, small-town, and urban life (as opposed
to poverty in agricultural communities). According to Hurley, Stryker used
questions to give focused direction and purpose to the photographers' field
work--to illustrate: What do people do at home in the evenings? Do the
activities in a small town differ from those in a large city? How do people
dress for church? Where do people meet? Do beer halls and pool halls take
the place of country clubs for the poor? [and even broader questions] What
are the key economic factors in the existence of a small town? The
railroad? The highway? How can these be represented visually? Has anyone
ever taken a really good series of pictures of a filling station, showing
its relationship to the restless, shifting American population? What do
railroad stations look like? How do they relate to small-town life? (98)

When I first read the above, I thought it might be interesting if PDML
photogs worked in self-selected groups and pursued similar questions but
with an international scope. For example, What do people from selected
countries do at home in the evenings? How do people from selected countries
dress for religious services? What are the key economic factors in selected
small towns around the world? What do back yard gardens look like in
selected countries? What are the popular tourist sites in selected
countries? How does the architecture differ in selected countries? What
does the native flora fauna look like in selected countries? What do gas
stations look like in selected countries? (see Tim Hetherington's study on
Arab gas stations--fascinating stuff) What types of dance classes are
offered in selected countries? How do weddings differ in selected
countries? What kinds of pets do people have in selected countries? How has
the landscape changed in selected countries? and so-on and so-on. The
possibilities are endless!

A project like this would give those who are interested a chance to
collaborate with other photographers from different countries, work on a
question together, post the final international photographic study in a
gallery, and share with the PDML list, of course. I see this as an
*anybody-who-wants-to and *in-your-own-time* kind of project. I also see
it as a project that takes advantage of PDML's international character,
which is rich and interesting. I also envision a hint of text to accompany
each photograph in the gallery--think of the old Life magazine.

Any interest?
Cheers, Christine

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilmx100/

They were clearly exasperated with the combination of wonderful camera
and stupid flaws. I have to admit I'm not that tempted. I would do
better to buy some nice glass for the E-P1, or get the E-P2 with the
EVF and then get some nice glass. I'm just not sure I would want to
drop that much money on a camera with a fixed lens at the
35mm-equivalent FL, which is not my favorite. The fact that I'm
taking so much trouble to explain why I don't want it is suspicious,
however. I suspect that if $$$ weren't a factor I would buy one and
use it whenever I could.

Thanks. I've read most of the review and, having done so (and if i had
enough money) I would pass it by for now and go get another Epson R-D1.
Really.

In almost 40 years as a writer and photographer, I've tackled some pretty tough
assignments, but this one has to go down as the most difficult. It's the story
of a car built sixty years ago by a somewhat eccentric and very private
millionaire. And only one person who was there to see it is still alive. A
couple of months of research and numerous drafts were necessary, and because
it's a newspaper piece, it had to be whittled down to a manageable size.
Some of the photos that appear here and in Sunday's paper are mine.
Ironically, I shot them as snaps to show the Times editors what the car looked
like, but they were more than happy with them. I had intended to do a
controlled shoot, but whatever. In any case, it's here on the web and will be
on the front page of the Times auto section on Sunday.

Nope, that's an old wives' tale. The Arthritis Foundation and others

no connection between knee (or any other joint) problems and running.
My father never ran at all for sport or fitness and his knees were
