How about a report for the list from one of you guys!?! Chris couldn't make it yesterday, so I went to the exhibition today because I had something else to do in that area. The exhibition space is really good. It's some sort of Victorian railway building that's been converted as part of the enormous regeneration taking place around Kings Cross St. Pancras. There is an architect's model of the whole site on the ground floor of the exhibition building. The exhibition itself is quite small and I thought the pictures were rather variable, from superb to meh. Many of them are top class, whatever the back story, but I made an effort to evaluate them without the back story influencing me, trying to think If I saw this without knowing who took it, what would be my reaction?. Meh, in a few cases. The good ones, however, are great and I look forward to seeing many more as the backlog is whittled away. It's a great shame though that Maier was not in contact with other street photographers of the time. If her pictures had been known in the 1950s she would stand alongside some of the top names from that school, but now she can only be a footnote and a curiosity. The influence of that school of photography has already been made, and I don't think she will go on to influence anyone significant, expect perhaps to learn more about the Chicago influence on street photography. The exhibition is part of London Street Photography week. After it I went to London's former Little Italy, which is centred round the church of San Pietro. Today is when they have their annual procession, which I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago, so I went along to photograph it. Lots of street photographers had obviously had the same idea because I saw many of the same faces I'd seen earlier at the Maier show. I'll post some photos of the procession later. Fast 12 and 45 mm, add the new Summilux 25mm from Panasonic, and they now have my preferred lens kit in hand. All they need beyond that, in addition to the existing FT/mFT macro lenses, is a fast 85mm ... for me, anyway. I fully expect the next pro-grade body from Olympus following the E-5 to be 100% compatible with Micro-FourThirds lenses as well as FourThirds SLR lenses. That will most likely have built-in an even better EVF than the current Olympus VF-2 option. That's what I'm waiting for before doing any expansion of my Olympus system gear. Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr, and maybe a K5 update later... But how many times I heard this from friends... countless. Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio photography. I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a friend of mine directed me to his page. (FYI: http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ ) So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough for studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already reached his level and you feel it's not enough for you? Obviously... the answer is no :D But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love Sony's new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and most importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no. But which other company offers you the possibility to try the astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so comfortable that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make the use of the camera comfortable? But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the 3rd party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of the main concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with Pentax :) So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a bit more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good partner for my photography needs. Why did I write this? Well... Paul Just what are non-members seeing on Flickr that members aren't? Has anybody ~really~ tested it or are they just guessing and assuming? To test Paul's claim I walked over to my son's computer and viewed my Flickr photostream. My son isn't a Flickr member, and I never use his computer so it doesn't have any cookies for Flickr or Yahoo that would give him members privileges. Neither my computer's nor my son's have any ad-blocking software at work. Flash and Java are enabled for us both. The pages I saw were ~absolutely~ 100 percent identical to the pages I see on my own computers. Every part of the page layout was the same down to the smallest detail, including the single ad panel below and to the right of the display picture. Then I viewed Godfrey's photostream at my son's computer. No ads at all, just as it should be because Godfrey is a paid subscriber. On Flickr that doesn't just mean no ads for Godder's eyes, it also means no ads for his viewers. Not even paid subscribers to photo.net can make that claim. I can't imagine what some people are seeing that makes them believe Flickr is as bad as photo.net. Flickr advertising is smaller and less prominently placed than photo.net ads. There is only one ad on the standard Flickr photo page against three ads on a standard photo.net photo page. Other Flickr display pages such as Lightbox or All Sizes don't have ads. If you choose the first link that Godfrey always supplies you'll get a Lightbox page so you won't need to bitch about any perceived Flickr crapulence. For my part I'll tell you which is the clean page when I supply links. From: Godfrey DiGiorgi The plenoptic concept is making the rounds today. At least 14 people have sent me notes about it. I've been tracking this technology from the first discussions and talks about it in 2006ish, IIRC. The idea is simple: Instead of capturing only spatial information from the incoming light, capture the vector information as well. That allows for in-process focus adjustment and more sophisticated image correction processing. It's not 3D or holography, it's more information with which to focus and render the image. The downside of this is all technical. You generally need about 10x as many photo receptors to produce a given number of finished image pixels ... so a 12 Mpixel image relies on having somewhere around 120-144 million photosites behind them to capture both spatial and vector data. Similarly, the image processing and data handling systems have to be suitably robust to handle that amount of incoming data... It's interesting, but I think that the big news is that some money is being handed to Ted Ng now to develop his prototypes into a viable production camera. The technology curve is catching up to the needs of this kind of capture and processing, so a new game in photography could happen in the near future. - No virus found in this message. I've got this little tip (or trick) from DigitalRev TV on Youtube and I have to say it really works :) Well cut a long story short, the picture: http://15kb.posterous.com/a-little-pause The reason why I am posting the picture because I've posted it on a hungarian forum and I got a nice e-bashing (well quite what I've expected from my fellow hungarians :D) yet I really like this picture post processed this way. Re: idea for a pdml photography project
Living as I do in the surrounding rural area of a small (6000) southern town, I'll try to be aware of possible themes, e.g., small eateries. -Original Message- From: Christine Aguila christ...@caguila.com Sender: pdml-boun...@pdml.net Date: Wed, 18 May 2011 15:07:16 To: pdml@pdml.net Reply-To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: idea for a pdml photography project Hi Everyone: I just finished F. Jack Hurley's book, Portrait of a Decade: Roy Stryker and the Development of Documentary Photography in the Thirties. Many of you have probably read this, but if not, you should be able to find it in your local library or secure a used copy via bookfinder or amazon. At 175 pages, the book provides a nice broad look at Roy Stryker's life, his years studying and teaching economics, his working relationship with Rexford Tugwell, and, of course, his leadership at the Farm Security Administration (FSA). All fascinating stuff! You won't be disappointed--I promise! The book has inspired an idea that might be of interest to PDML list members. In 1936, Stryker began to broaden the FSA projects to include photographic documentation or rural, small-town, and urban life (as opposed to poverty in agricultural communities). According to Hurley, Stryker used questions to give focused direction and purpose to the photographers' field work--to illustrate: What do people do at home in the evenings? Do the activities in a small town differ from those in a large city? How do people dress for church? Where do people meet? Do beer halls and pool halls take the place of country clubs for the poor? [and even broader questions] What are the key economic factors in the existence of a small town? The railroad? The highway? How can these be represented visually? Has anyone ever taken a really good series of pictures of a filling station, showing its relationship to the restless, shifting American population? What do railroad stations look like? How do they relate to small-town life? (98) When I first read the above, I thought it might be interesting if PDML photogs worked in self-selected groups and pursued similar questions but with an international scope. For example, What do people from selected countries do at home in the evenings? How do people from selected countries dress for religious services? What are the key economic factors in selected small towns around the world? What do back yard gardens look like in selected countries? What are the popular tourist sites in selected countries? How does the architecture differ in selected countries? What does the native flora fauna look like in selected countries? What do gas stations look like in selected countries? (see Tim Hetherington's study on Arab gas stations--fascinating stuff) What types of dance classes are offered in selected countries? How do weddings differ in selected countries? What kinds of pets do people have in selected countries? How has the landscape changed in selected countries? and so-on and so-on. The possibilities are endless! A project like this would give those who are interested a chance to collaborate with other photographers from different countries, work on a question together, post the final international photographic study in a gallery, and share with the PDML list, of course. I see this as an *anybody-who-wants-to and *in-your-own-time* kind of project. I also see it as a project that takes advantage of PDML's international character, which is rich and interesting. I also envision a hint of text to accompany each photograph in the gallery--think of the old Life magazine. Any interest? A couple of months of research and numerous drafts were necessary, and because it's a newspaper piece, it had to be whittled down to a manageable size.
