I'm not sure for other brands but my retailer (which is Pentax fan/collector and usually reliable) says Sigma defenitely does reverse-engeneering. He does also notice that whatever the mount (even for Canon etc.), he has a way higher number of returns/warranty repairs with Sigma stuff. He says

Buy Pentax lenses. They're better performers, 99.9% of the time anyway. The Pentax FA24-90/3.5-4.5 AL would be an excellent choice for a lens in this focal length range. Thanks. tho with digital, I will also need a very wide lens to cover from 10/15 to 24/28 James -- PDML
