Some cards have them, some cards don't.  I don't think they're very important but they can when bent out of position keep the card from functioning correctly.  The may also be able to damage the reader if they're bent out of position, though I've never actually seen a reader damaged... On

I was having trouble inserting on of my 32 gig cards the other day, it felt stiff going in and no info on the LCD and no orange light when inserting. I finally noticed one of those thin plastic strips bewtween the contacts had bent. I moved it back but every so often would bend and jam the card
