Re: PESO: Asahi Glass

2017-05-19 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Ken and Alan.

For those few who may not know, "Asahi" is a common brand name in Japan.
Besides Asahi Optical and Asahi Brewing, there is the Asahi Shimbun, one of
the largest and most respected newspapers in Japan.

http://www.asahi.com/ajw/

Asahi is a very nationalistic concept, similar to the term "Columbia" in
the US. "Asa" means morning, while "hi" is fire or the sun. Asahi
therefore is the morning sun, or the "rising Sun," the red circle symbol of
the nation of Japan.

It is also related to the Japanese word for their own country" Nihon (or
Nippon). "Ni" also means sun, and "hon" means, in this context, origin.
Thus, Japan is "the origin of the sun," or "the land of the rising sun."
That term, of course, like much of Japan's language and was borrowed from
China. The the Chinese, China was "the middle kingdom," or the center of
the civilized world. Looking east from China, Japan is indeed the land of
the rising sun.

50 years ago, I bought an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic at the PX, rather than the
Minolta 101 I went there to buy, in part because I was told that Asahi made
its own glass, and that Asahi Glass was the very best available.

Tuesday evening I ran across this sample of Asahi glass, and was impressed
by its weight, color and taste:
