BLS DAILY REPORT, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1996 RELEASED TODAY: Employer costs for employee compensation in the United States (private industry and state and local governments) averaged $18.82 per hour worked in March 1996. Straight-time wages and salaries (71.6 percent of the costs) averaged $13.48 an hour, and benefit costs (the remaining 28.4 percent averaged $5.34 .... Wage data compiled by BNA in the first 40 weeks of 1996 show that the median first-year wage increase in newly negotiated collective bargaining agreements is 3 percent an hour ....(Daily Labor Report, pages 2,D-1).
