Some of us are just smarter than the rest, I would have never thought of that. Steve For the Edison Standard on display at our local museum, I used a very short 5-40 allen head set screw. This was placed in the carriage and tightened down before the real reproducer set screw was put

I would not think that they would track well, without the 'give' of the spring. The rigid bolt connection seems as if it would be very stiff.  For those who are unfamiliar with this early horn, I have posted a picture of the horn and crane and the suspension bolt at this link:
