Hi Ron I use lining leather that I buy at Tandy Leather stores. It is thin, pebble finished on one side and raw on the other.  It is available in a dark brown like the old belts too.  The only thing I don't like is that it can be a little stretchy, so I make belts slightly shorter, that way

If you happen to find an original belt that is still intact you will discover that it is 1 piece, no glued joint. You will also discover that the orientation of the leather grain changes along the length of the belt. They made them by cutting a concentric circle pattern and then stretching
