Re: [Phono-L] Can anyone identify this Sonora?

2014-03-20 Thread Stan Stanford
The Elite is the 5th model down with the Supreme being No. 1.As Bob
said, wooden tone arms could be on several of the top models including
yours, but all except the Supreme, could have metal tone arms. I have a
Supreme and it came with 2 wooden tone arms with different reproducers: one
for lateral and the other for vertical cut records. Yes, the complete tone
arm on my Supreme is easily removable.

Thanks, Stan. I have a mahogany Sonora Elite, with a wooden tone arm.
Would that model have been a level (or two) below this one, then?

Can anyone tell me which model of Sonora phonograph this is? It looks
to be one of their higher-end bombe machines, but I've always had
trouble identifying particular Sonora models. If it is a higher-end
machine, should I be surprised that it doesn't have a wooden tone arm?
(Do those wooden tone arms really sound better, for that matter?) And
am I the only one who's never seen a Sonora in oak before? It seems to
me every one I've ever seen has been mahogany. Thoughts?Oh, and if
anyone has one of these and would like to share photos of it, I'd
appreciate it; I'm especially curious about what it's supposed to look
like with the doors open.

Subject: [Phono-L] Why I never made it to Union

Folks,

After weeks of preparation, time and expense I drove 4 ½ hours to
Elgin, IL and checked into the Hampton Inn on Thursday evening. I was
looking forward to spending Friday, Saturday and Sunday with friends at the
world’s largest antique phonograph show hosted at Donley’s Wild West Town in
Union, IL. This was my best and last face-to-face opportunity to convince
other talented individuals to replace me as President of the International
Antique Phonograph Society and as Editor of our magazine In The Groove.

About mid-way during my drive, I started feeling a little feverish
and my stomach developed an ache, not really a pain. I was blaming it on a
possible bad raison from the Trail Mix dried fruit I enjoyed the night
before. I checked into the Elgin, IL Hampton Inn, and carried in my
suitcase and some of the equipment I brought along for the Phonovention
presentations. I started feeling worse, so I called it a night and went to
bed at 8:00 p.m. At 9:30 or so, I knew there was something a dose of
Pepto-Bismol just would not cure. I got up and dressed, but I could not
stand up straight. As I walked the hallway from my hotel room to the front
desk to ask for directions to the nearest hospital, knowing full well that
I’d never be able to drive there myself, I was met by a small group of
fellow antique phonograph collectors who were headed to their rooms, and one
person who was at that time a complete stranger to me, Bob Barnett, offered
to drive me in his car to the hospital emergency room. He offered to stay
with me until I was either dismissed or admitted - this was at 10:00 at
night. I gave Bob, my new found friend, the keys to my truck and asked him
to give them to the Hampton Inn’s front desk. I had to make some quick
arrangements with HAPS President, Rich Buck, to empty my truck of all of the
items I had prepared and brought with me for our trade show booth so it
could be set up and ready for the event at 8:00 a.m. the following morning.
Rich, John Hauger, Joan Rolfs and I am sure many others pitched in and
completed what needed to be done in my absence.

The CAT scan and blood tests proved that it was a ruptured,
gangrenous appendix. I had the emergency surgery at 9:00 Friday morning as
Union was getting underway. I was released from Sherman Hospital late
Monday afternoon.

To put it mildly, I was very disappointed to miss Union and
Phonovention 2012. Rich Buck dropped by the hospital with a card prepared
by Joan Rolfs and signed by several attendees and friends. He informed me
that Phonovention was very successful and that Patrick Feaster’s
presentation room was packed to capacity.

Now that I am home, I am receiving cards in the mail and E-Mails
from well-wishers with questions on what occurred, so I thought it best to
let everyone know I am doing great and getting ready to start compiling the
August / September Issue of In The Groove.

Convalescingly Yours,

Tim McCormick

I'm at Union and am enjoying the Show very much as usual. Everyone seemed
to be treated fairly this year as far as I know. I didn't go to the
pre-show but heard it was not well attended. I do admit missing some of
the parking lot action at Union the day before the Show, but when people
started moving the parking lot action earlier and earlier until some were
arriving 3 or more days before the Show it was unmanageable.

I like the Union Show and plan to keep coming. For me it's as much about
seeing and greeting old friends as it is about buying and selling. I feel
blessed to know and be around such wonderful people from all over the world.

[Phono-L] No Raps on MAPS, But Seek Chaps for CAPS

2008-03-12 Thread stan stanford
Thanks, George for your comments about CAPS. I have been amazed at the
quality of the CAPS Journal, The Sound Box. The articles by you, Tim,
Rene and the others are outstanding. I agree, this is the oustanding
journal in the hobby. The Journal alone is worth the membership price.
The CAPS organization has made a gigantic leap in quality in all respects
over the past few years. All of those seriously interested in the hobby
should be a member of both MAPS and CAPS.

 Jerry,

Thanks for your kind words about my new position in CAPS. There's no doubt
that they wanted me simply for eye-candy. But it's worth noting that CAPS
is not just for California collectors - any more than MAPS is solely for
those living in Michigan. I've been a member of both organizations for
many years, and agree that every serious collector should be a member of
both. What puzzles me is the number of MAPS members who don't belong to
CAPS as well. The CAPS quarterly journal, The Sound Box, is the best - I
repeat - THE BEST publication on antique phonographs and related items.
 It's a large-format magazine (8 1/2 x 11) packed with photos and
illustrations. Members just received their March issue last week, and - as
in every issue - there are a number of substantive articles for the
collector who wants to learn more about our hobby. The eight (yes, EIGHT)
articles in the current issue cover these topics:1) A discussion of the
Columbia Period Grafonolas, who made the cabinets
, and illustrations of 18 different models! 2) An article and 4 photos of
an unusual Exposicion gramophone by Larry Karp. Ever seen one of these?
 3) Allen Koenigsberg wrote about a long-forgotten 1905 advertising
campaign using a giant balloon tethered to a building in New York City to
promote Victor Talking Machines (w/5 illustrations). A sudden windstorm
brought near-tragedy and one man barely escaped with his life! 4) Thomas
Rhodes (Mr.Orthophonic) writes about Joseph Maxfield's sound box - no,
not the Orthophonic - the one BEFORE that!? 5) So we thought we knew about
EVERY recording of Thomas Edison's voice? How about a 1917 Blue Amberol
(yep - it predates Let Us Not Forget) containing Edison himself
extolling the new Electrip Ediphone? Plus other related artifacts shown in
four photos. 6) Everyone knows that cylinder records are vertically
recorded, but if you read The Sound Box, you're also aware of two types
of LATERALLY RECORDED cylinder records! 5 photos acc
ompany this article. 7) Charles Marowitz writes an article in each issue
on early recording stars, and I think he does an excellent job every time.
This issue, he covered Annette Hanshaw (including 3 illustrations), and
she seemed like such a babe in print that I was inspired to dig out a
couple of her records to see what she sounded like. 8) When we think
catalog sales, we think of Sears - don't we? Well, Montgomery-Ward put
Sears to shame in the 1899-1902 period with the wonderful phonographs it
sold, such as Edison Polyphones, Berliner Johnson Gramophones, the
Thornward, and others. Nine illustrations from actual catalogs are
included in this article. And that's all in just ONE issue of The Sound
Box!? Rene Rondeau is the Editor, and does a magnificent job of creating
a beautiful, eye-catching journal with full-color covers. There are 36
illustrations in this issue, which doesn't include the 5 pages of
 advertisements!

CAPS maintains a website at www.ca-phono.org. I encourage everyone who's
not a member to do themselves a favor and check it out. Sorry for the long
essay, but this is really too good to miss!

 Best to all,
 George Paul

Any experiences or comments on bidder identification protection on
ebay?! I am always worried that the bidding is sham bidding in these
auctions, artificially raising the price? I actually look for bidders
whom I have bid against in the past. This lends towards legitimacy, but
also confirms what I am bidding on, others that collect the same thing
are also interested.

Has anyone bid, or won anything with these bidder identification
protected auctions? The seller of the Zonophone-A is doing that with
that particular auction.

reproduction of sound was terrible. The person doing the description

It looks like a Zonophone A, one of the earliest Zonophones. It's an
attractive machine with 2 glass sides. It looks all original including the
reproducer. It was the highest priced Zonophone at the time. It does
look a little rusty, so I'm surprised it's going for that much. I would
have thought about $5,000.Obviously I'm wrong. The horn looks unusual.
Is it paper mache? I have an all original Zonophone A, but is has an all

[Phono-L] Phonographs as an Investment

2006-12-24 Thread Stan Stanford
I think very desirable machines, especially rare machines, have continued to
increase in value. More common machines including common horn machines
(e.g., Edison standards, homes, triumphs; Victor I-III) have not increased
much in the past few years. In fact some prices have even softened.
Entry level machines (e.g., Amberola 30, Victrolas: VV-IV; VV-VI) have not
increased since I started collecting about 15 years ago.

bulk of a beautiful rare collection of high-end upright and outside horn

come to cash out of the hobby.

I have been collecting for just 5 years. For those of you who have many
