[Phono-L] Decorated Gem

2011-04-10 Thread DeeDee Blais
I can't help myself... My mother-in-law did toll painting back in the sixties
and seventies and it looks exactly like the Gem. If anyone likes, I could show
her the photos for her opinion. It looks like a sixties job to me. Wow,
that's
fifty years ago! Jerry B.

Fifty years ago qualifies as new. But show it to your mother-in-law
anyway to see what she thinks.
And while you're at it, play her I'll be waiting for my mother-in law.
By the way, what is toll painting?

I think Jerry meant tole painting.  I seem to recall he got beat up pretty bad
over a typographical error a while back and he took it all very well.  Let's
just let this once pass.  Jerry contributes a lot to the group and to the hobby
in general and certainly deserves a break now and then.

I'll be waiting for my mother-in law.
One of my favorite songs...

By the way, what is toll painting?
In the 50's-60's - toll painting took a toll on your health, because paint
contained lead. :)

OK. Since I knew you made up that bit of information I went and Googled
Toll painting. It's actually spelled Tole painting and is a form of folk
art with pictures on the internet strongly resembleling the Gem phono.
Who knows when the phono was painted?? It could very well have been in
the 1960s when it apparently was popular.

The TOLE painting took a toll on everybody who's stuck with it now! Much
like the guilt he felt over the gilt!!!

It's is actually spelled Tole painting and it's a form of folk art with
examples showing flowered designs very similar to that on the Gem phono.

There's a folk-painting style called 'rosemaling'. I'm not sure if it's
exactly the same as tole-painting, but it's quite similar.
