Leezy, for example, has been quite active in getting this whole thing

Yes, I couldn't agree more about the need for someone to be in charge and
having people responsible for certain areas. That's a good way to make this

As we now have many people in the list giving suggestion and idea for the
pinhole photography day.
I suggest to set up a commitee(hope I use the correct word) to work for
this
event first.
Member of this commitee is to collect idea and suggestion and then anounce
it to all member of the list , let them vote for decision and work it out.
Just like what James have done a lot for it, thanks James.

Now we have the following task and better to have one person to incharge of
:
1. Foundation of the date: Date, logo, web address, site setup, money
collecting-I think James is the best choice.
2. Site content, press release: hi Guy, I like your press release, you like
to ...?
3. Promotion: sending information of this event to related society,
organization, magazine...-I would like to be one member of this task, all
of
you is already a member of this task.
4. Activity: photo submiting, competition, exhibition, publication- I would
like to arrange the competition.
5. technique support: programme for voting, photo submiting...
6. Exhibition: I would like to be one memeber of it.
We can have several member and one person-in-charge for each task, we also
need a chairman for this committe, I vote James for this post (if you don't
mind) and he anounce all solution or suggestion collected from the list to
all people.
7. Any more?

I would like to arrange the formation of this committiee.
Any comment?

Re: [pinhole-discussion] response from Eric Renner

2001-02-20 Thread Larry Fratkin
I have designed and built most of the file uploader for the pinhole day
site. It allows you to enter information about your picture and yourself and
then uploads it and FTP's it to the WPPD web-site. Then, periodically, a
tool runs and generates a set of web pages based on the info and pictures
uploaded.

Are we changing our mind about where it is hosted and/or who is doing the
uploader? A quick decision would be good.

Hi Larry and All,

One more thought. Are you having the problem with hand-made cameras?
I've had similar problems with the oatmeal box, cigar box and tin can
cameras that I've spray painted. Over time, the paint comes off in
tiny pieces. Usually I spray the cameras with compressed air before
loading. This helps, but if the cameras are bounced around in my car
or as I carry them around, the paint flakes leave pinhole spots on the
paper or film negs. Does anyone know of a cure for this problem?

Thanks,

depending on how long the exposure was. But, like everything else, this is a

It will be interesting to see how it performs in a flare situation.
In theory, the walls of the pinhole will be perfectly smooth so
the flare should be more regular (less random) than a traditional
pinhole. How thin is the metal the pinhole was drilled in? (I ask
this because the main reason for the sanding a dimple method
of drilling a pinhole is to thin the metal so that the walls of the
hole are as short as possible.)

It's easy to make a dial calculator like the one on an exposure meter,
 but
that goes to longer exposures and slower film speeds. I've got one on
   my web page at http://linux.bbn.com/~koolish

Thanks for the dial calculator. I downloaded it and am going to make
one.
I have been using something similar but it is a bit more cumbersome. I
made
a long slide-rule with all of the f-stops and speeds projected beyond my
handheld light meter. The only information my slide rule has that the
dial
doesn't have is that I have included f-stops and shutter speeds halfway
between each of the standard settings. For example: the extra f-stop
between f/22 and f/32 would be f/27.25. I have done this all the way up
to
f/4096 and 16,384 seconds (or 4.5 hours). Most people don't need to go
that
 high but you never know.

Yup, it makes perfect sense. You're right, mounting usually involves cutting
away most of the film. I'll look into generating multiple zone plates per
image. It should be relatively simple. Then, if Eric wants to make zone plates

I also thought about contact printing the image after I get the first one back.

Larry,
Many thanks for this great little tool! I needed a 30mm zone plate for one
of my short focal cameras but the last I knew from Eric Renner when I was
looking for that short focal length is that he did'nt have any.

It occured to me that this is very tiny little spot on a 35mm film size
(24x26mm), with a lot of wasted film around it that has to be cut out anyway to
fit on the hole of the camera.
So what I want to do is to place several zone plates on the same 24x36mm
space. I could do this by generating several zone plate files and then cutting
and pasting them with Photoshop on one single sheet of film. Or, if you have
friends who want zone plates as well, you could share the cost of the lab by
placing perhaps 4 zone plates on the same sheet of film.
Seems to make sense. Does it?

Benno,
I guess it needs more instructions. I'll put some together and put them on the
page. Basically, the width and the height are MM and tell what size film you're
going to. Then the focal length is the distance between the zone plate and the
film. The number of rings is up to the user. The resolution, DPMM, should be
around 100 to get a good image. That translates to roughly 2500 DPI. Are these
good enough instructions? Anyone want to add or comment on them?

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Zone Plate Image Generator

2000-12-27 Thread Larry Fratkin
john,
Yes, I did put a few hours into this, but it was fun. Thanks for appreciating
that.

What were the settings you typed in? I'd like to repeat them to see what I get.
Also, sometimes you really have to look for the zone plate in the middle of the
image.

Larry, Thanks for making this. I'm sure you have already put a lot of work
into it... but i get nothing but a blank bitmap. No rings at all.

Subject: [pinhole-discussion] Zone Plate Image Generator

Folks,
I have created a zone plate image generator so that I could make my
own zone plates. The program downloads a .BMP so it's PC centric, I think. The
idea was to use the program to generate a zone plate image and then take it to
the bureau to have it put to film. They charge about $15.00 for this. I haven't
tried it out yet so I don't know how well it works. I'll be visiting them on
Friday and I'll drop it off then.

[pinhole-discussion] 35 mm slides

2000-12-02 Thread larry fratkin
I want to enter a photo contest in which they want a 35mm slide. How do you go
about doing this? Does the slide have to be top quality or do you just shoot it
with your 35mm camera?

Hi all,

BTW It looks like we are going to keep the monthly mailing. The vote is
about 30 to 1, in favor. I'm glad that the vote was not as close as the
Bush, Gore vote. I'd hate to count all the dimples.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] pinhole and polaroid

2000-11-04 Thread larry fratkin
Greg,
You really overpaid. But, alas, it's a good camera once you fix the lens.

If you're handy with mechanical things it's fairly easy. You have to remove
the screws holding the bellows to the lens piece. Then remove the lens. I
drilled mine which shattered it nicely. Then, I believe there is a blade,
it's been a while since I did this, behind the actual shutter that becomes
your shutter when you remove the real shutter blades. It will be obvious
when you work the shutter a few times while it's apart and watch. Tape the
pinhole where the shutter is and it all goes back together and looks the
same as before.

Good luck.

I picked up one for $6.00 (so I overpaid) and indeed, the lens is
crappy - and not fun/interesting crappy, just crappy. Do you
have any suggestions on how to convert it to a pinhole?

Thanks
