I have an old Dell Latitude c640 that needs some repair work. I am looking
for recommendations for local repair shops.
The laptop was running just fine with two 512 MB memory sticks. Then it
started freezing up after it warmed up. If I only use one memory stick, it
works just fine, although a
It could just be the heat buildup. Try to verify that the fan is working
and check for dust buildup. Canned air works pretty good for blowing those
things out. You might want to try that first before spending money to have
someone else fix it.
You could also monitor temperatures with one of

Good advice (as usual from Larry). You might also let memtest run on it
for a while to try and pinpoint the failure.

What would the best be?
Looking for something I can hold in my hand... A real book.

I'm somewhat disappointed that this motherboard has only two memory
slots. They are different colors, whatever that means with only two
slots.

I think that means no dual channel. The dual channel MB I've seen have 4
slots - 2 pairs. memtest might tell you a little more than POST.

The fan is working and rather dust free. Unfortunately, the temp monitor
programs don't work with this older laptop.

This is likely dual channel (each color indicates a separate channel anymore)
do you have a make/model i can find out some ram compatibility for you

That seems to indicate to me that the 2nd mem slot / mb is bad.
To answer your question, I don't know of a repair shop.

Have you tried to run with just ram in the 2nd slot.
not best practice but sometimes you can get it to post and do diags like this.

memtest won't run when both banks are installed. It crashes somewhere from
during boot to running the test.

I bought a new laptop for myself - developing java code with only 512 MB was

the 1 GB of RAM. So, I am back to looking for a reputable repair shop

One more thing to test the heat theory. Remove the cover that gives you
access to the memory sticks. Make sure both are in place and properly
seated. Elevate the laptop (a pair of books or something but be sure the
memory opening is not covered. Set up a small fan to blow into or across

Which makes me think, where's the heat coming from? Not necessarily the
cpu. Some HDDs generate excessive heat in their later years. You might
check the SMART data and see if it's been overheating. Although
overheating (up to 60c or so) isn't necessarily an indicator of pending
failure
I am looking for someone with expertise to come to the installfest on 1/30
to help Mark with his sound and webcam problems with Skype (see below). I
could play around at it but that would not be fair to Mark.
BTW Eric S. is helping with the virtualization question.

I don't know Skype from Adam, so I can't really help on that front. I can
probably guess it's not playing correctly with PulseAudio, though.

Lisa,
You are right, but there are also issues of 64 bit versus 32 bit (my machine
is 64 bit and skype is only 32, I believe), and then alsa and oss. Alsa is
running fine now, so I am not sure why I need oss, since I thought skype
uses alsa as well. I think the real problem is that alsa is not

I would check the MB specs. A lot of motherboards out there run RAM at a
slower speed when you exceed a certain amount (usually when you load up all of
their slots).
This is done because they use cheap chipsets that actually cannot manage the
RAM at the higher speed with the maximum amount
