PmWiki works, is simple to administrate and is functionality robust.
There are more functionally robust wikis but their install and admin
requirements are much greater.

Ive started getting weird error messages, no idea why. The path is correct for
the temp directory, there is not such a path for the farmD errors - everything
was working for months. Something was happening with the $farmD variable in
config.php also, I deleted this to get the scripts/cookbook

If you use Apache it should be rather easy: try and add
deny from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
in the .htaccess file at the root folder of your site.
