Iran, South Africa call for strategic partnership

Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN -- South African President Thabo Mbeki and Iranian Supreme National
Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani stressed the need for a bilateral
strategic partnership in the first round of their talks in Pretoria on
Wednesday.

Larijani and Mbeki discussed international issues and generalities of
bilateral cooperation in various spheres and agreed that bilateral
relations should be enhanced.

Larijani thanked South Africa for its measures at the International Atomic
Energy Agency Board of Governors session last September and expressed hope
that Pretoria would maintain its positive approach at the next IAEA Board
session in November.

Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Deputy Director Mohammad Saeedi has also
accompanied Larijani on the trip to South Africa.

South Africa is a permanent member of the IAEA Board of Governors.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched an intense dialogue with various
countries in order to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program, the
Iranian Students News Agency reported on Wednesday, quoting a top Foreign
Ministry official.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi told ISNA that Larijani is
currently holding useful talks on the nuclear issue with South African
officials in Pretoria.

Asefi also announced that Deputy Foreign Minister Mahdi Safari set out for
Malaysia and Indonesia on Tuesday for talks on the nuclear issue.

Meanwhile, Iran's deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs
started a tour of Latin American states on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry
spokesman added.

In addition to discussions on political, economic, and international
issues, Iran's civilian nuclear program will also be on the agenda of the
official meetings, he explained.
