Not sure if this must go here or to alsa.

In kernel 2.6.31-rc1 tag a patch to support 8 channels hdmi found on some
 recent nvidia gpus was merged.

I have been messing arround with pulseaudio 0.9.16 and when using
autodetection the hdmi is shown as stereo only, also specifying 8 channels
default in pulseaudio config. This is shown in the first screenshot.

When setting manually alsa-source module with hdmi:0 then pulseaudio shows
the 8 channels but with a wrong mapping. This is shown in the second
screenshot. Setting 10 channels default in the pulseaudio config the
correct mapping is shown, Front left, front right, Rear left, Rear right,
 Center and LFE.

This could be a conflict with the new volume application in gnome that
relies fully in pulseaudio instead on alsa mixers.

When using balance and fading controls it have strange behavior, I now
that this should go to gnome bugzilla, but, I'm issuing here because the
volume can achieve really 400% with the corresponding very big distortion
and perhaps could damage the hardware. So pulseaudio should prevent to
attain this very high volume levels.

Is possible to see this also with the mic volume, if we set to the max
with gnome volume the mic can be set to 150%.

This is a feature, not a bug.

Volumes 100% are implemented using digital amplification, and is a much
 requested feature.

Comment:

With previous module versions pulseaudio says that the device
corresponding to the hdmi only supports 2 channels if more than 2 is set
in the config for default and really it only shows max 2 channels but with
the latest module present in 2.6.31 no message is shown the mixer shows
channels up to 8. Could be a way to test or to ask how many channels a
 device can have at max.

pavucontrol artifically limits the range to 100%. g-v-c can do 150%. If
you go the command line tools you can get to whatever level you want.

Comment:

We have replace the dB to % mapping in 0.9.16 which should make the volume
sliders feel much more natural, so that a greater part of the sliders
 actually maps to hearable volumes.

Comment(by lennart):

Also, please don't use the bare hw:xxx devices. Access the card via the
 high-level front:xxx, spdif:, surround71:xxx device strings
 instead.

Could you please retry with 0.9.16-test4? Some drivers seem to have issues
with the order in which buffer/frag size is configured. This is turned
 around in test4.

Finally, for cards that have multiple independant outputs or multiple
independant inputs 0.9.16 now introduces the ability to define the set of
exposed profiles via config files. Please read up on this here:

 https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio-
 discuss/2009-June/004229.html

I'd be happy to add a profile set specifically for your card to the set we
already ship like those for the Audio4DJ cards:

 /profile-sets
