Hi Martin and Alex, Thanks for replying to this posting. Martin, thanks for posting this link ( http://blog.qgis.org/node/59 ). I keep on googling for python qgis pyqgis examples but this link never showed up in the search. Alex, probably you can post the lecture notes / lab materials from your teaching course in your website, similar to your previous adviser - Prof R. Plant did here: http://www.plantsciences.ucdavis.edu/plant/qgislabs.htm I find Lab10 for the above link useful to what I am doing - thematic mapping in R. Hi, File created using CLI (command line interface) in Spatialite could not be opened in QGIS 1.5 and (QGIS 1.4) in Windows 7 and XP. Re: [Qgis-developer] QGIS build with GDAL 1.7.x - Ubuntu
Here's the steps. 1. Open shapefile 2. Save it as spatialite i.e. Sqlite Maybe did you use Save as...? No. I clicked the vector layer and save sqlite. I have been this testing for 2 weeks now, trying to find the right version of QGIS in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux with Spatialite. My laptop now is triple boot (Window 7, Mac OS X and Ubuntu) to find a solution. If you did, the .sqlite you created is not a valid spatialite database (non-spatial table inside it) but only a sqlite vector file. To open it use Add vector layer. I tried to do this Add vector layer with spatialite a week ago in Windows 7 and Windows XP. The funny thing is QGIS tries to open it as well and display tables to open. It should say not a valid file. Anyway, I have been doing the same steps / processes in QGIS in Windows and Mac OS X. Both built can open spatialite it created. QGIS windows has still problem with the latest spatialite 2.4.0. But at least it open spatialite database it created i.e. saving the vector file into sqlite. One of the main features of QGIS 1.5 release is how easy to save vector files to spatialite and open it. Building QGIS with GDAL1.7.3 would fix this problem as William did in QGIS Mac OS X. Re: [Qgis-developer] QGIS build with GDAL 1.7.x - Ubuntu
Hi Juergen And for the other builds spatialite support through the spatialite provider will also work just fine (ie. Layer/Add Spatialite Layer or Layer/New Spatialite Layer). QGIS 1.5.0.2 has problem with these processes. Mac OS version can do these operations. But Save As doesn't use the spatialite provider but OGR. So for that SpatiaLite support is up to GDAL/OGR. AFAIK earlier versions of GDAL didn't have a clear distinction between SQLite and SpatiaLite - so you don't know if sqlite means SQLite and SpatiaLite unless you check how GDAL was built. I'm not even sure GDAL 1.7 changes that - but it probably usually always built with spatialite. Mac OS version has the same problem. It saves as sqlite, not spatialite. Right now, Saves As should be avoid if we can dealing with Spatialite. I hope this will be fixed or remove from the listbox as option. Re: [Qgis-developer] QGIS build with GDAL 1.7.x - Ubuntu
Hi Alex, Thanks for your reply. I can make a new Spatialite layer using Layer-New-New Spatialite Layer. I believe this is the only correct way to make a Spatialite layer in the current version, Not 'Save As' that is OGR sqlite only. It is editable, saveable and loadable. Note QGIS uses a built in Spatialite in this case, I do not have spatialite installed on the system. Yes, I understand, the New Spatialite layer and QGIS has its own spatialite provider compiled wtih QGIS. My problem is, I am not creating any spatialite layer in QGIS, I like to view and edit spatialite created outside QGIS. The one that I am testing in opening in QGIS ubuntu has been open in Mac OS X QGIS-dev. I could not open the old and new spatialite, or any spatialite files in QGIS ubuntu. I can also verify that I can open Spatialite layers created with older versions of Spatialite directly in QGIS. You might want to start fresh with just what you get from the Ubuntugis repos. Mixing and matching with custom compiled can easily lead to multiple conflicting versions of libraries on your system path. Which version of QGIS are you using that is working spatialite? This version QGIS 1.5.0.2, right. Did you get it from this repository. sudo apt-get install add-apt-repository sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable sudo aptitude install qgis As mentioned in my previous posting, I am using QGIS 1.5.0.2 and QGIS1.6 trunk created by Juergen with no success. When I installed these two versions, one at the time, it actually picked the right library it was compiled as features of linux system. It does not mix and match until you compile your own version of QGIS. I have not done any compiling yet. I really like to get your version that is working. My ubuntu 10.04 is really clean since I just installed it 2 days ago and beside beside I am using the stock sqlite3 and spatialite that comes with ubuntu 10.04, not the new versions of sqlite and spatialite 2.4.0 r3a. Re: [Qgis-developer] QGIS build with GDAL 1.7.x - Ubuntu
Hi Juergen and Alex I solve the problem in New/Add Spatialite Layer. The spatialite CLI 2.4.0r3a is actually intervening the QGIS SpatiaLite provider (New SpatiaLite Layer/Add SpatiaLite Layer. I thought QGIS uses libspatialite and Spatialite binary does not interact with QGIS. I make unistalled Spatialite 2.4.0r3a and QGIS 1.5.0.2 works. This is what happening to me in Windows as well. In Mac OS X, I don't install the CLI spatialite, hence it is working properly. Thanks for your patient on dealing this problem. Now, we know why QGIS is not working when someone has been working with spatialite CLI before installing QGIS. Thanks. Noli On 8/29/10, Jürgen E. j...@norbit.de wrote: Hi Noli, On Sun, 29. Ok, let me repeat our earlier findings (with some additional info). Creating and using SpatiaLite databases via the SpatiaLite provider (New SpatiaLite Layer/Add SpatiaLite Layer) should work with any QGIS. But to create SpatiaLite databases using the QgsVectorFileWriter class (Save As) or use them via the OGR provider (Add Vector Layer) requires a QGIS linked to GDAL 1.7 that in turn is linked with SpatiaLite 2.4. The only public available Linux build I know that has that is the ubuntugis build of QGIS 1.5 - because ubuntugis' GDAL 1.7 has SpatiaLite support. The nightly debian builds are built against the GDAL the respective distribution has. Which is commonly earlier than GDAL 1.7 and therefore doesn't include SpatiaLite support. So unless you install a GDAL 1.7 from ubuntugis (or Debian experimental) and use a QGIS build against it (QGIS 1.5 from ubuntugis or your own build), you won't have SpatiaLite support in Save As and the OGR provider. SQLite support is probably there, but that's different from SpatiaLite. Which version of SpatiaLite is in use in the SpatiaLite provider is determined by whether or not the build is using the system's SpatiaLite or the qgis' internal SpatiaLite. The nightly trunk builds for Debian Squeeze and unstable and Ubuntu Lucid and Maverick use the system's SpatiaLite, all others (read Debian Lenny) use internal SpatiaLite, which currently is 2.4.0. When unstable and Maverick contain GDAL 1.7 the nightly builds with pick it up automatically. So eventually the problem with the nightly builds will solve itself. Anybody using Ubuntu 10.04 and can open spatialite database and what versions of QGIS, spatialite, ogr2org, etc. The tool is called ogr2ogr. But you could even have multiple libaries and therefore have a GDAL 1.7 ogr2ogr (from gdal-bin), but a QGIS that still uses an earlier GDAL. The version of GDAL your OGR provider is using is shown by ldd /usr/lib/qgis/plugins/libogrprovider.so | grep gdal And the version of system SpatiaLite, if any, the SpatiaLite provider uses is shown by ldd /usr/lib/qgis/plugins/libspatialiteprovider.so | grep spatialite You can also check the about box to see the versions QGIS was built with (which still might not necessarily be the currently installed and running versions). Re: [Qgis-developer] qgis-mapserver docs
I hope QGIS has html user manual aside from pdf manual. It offers quick and easy access to what you need rather than downloading the whole pdf which is quite big (e.g. 2 Mb) because of the screenshots and figures. If you are user in the developing countries or with a slow internet connection you don't want to download this pdf manuals if it is bigger than 1 Mb. Html / website user manual promotes / offers visibility of the project as well for example uDig has friendly manuals. Aside from it, it is harder to read pdf manual when the manual has more than 10 pages. http://www.refractions.net:8080/confluence/display/DEV/Home Probably we should consider Wiki Book /Wiki for QGIS, so users can contribute as well. Probably you can have 2 versions with data and without data. I suggest that probably you can put a link, a button to get the sample data in one of the plugin widgets. These are all suggestions to improve usabilities of the qgis plugins in general. Yes, I plussoie beaucoup. I agree, in a more proper language. Some of QGIS plugins are hard to figure out if you don't have a properly data to work on. And most of the users, have no real use of the plugin at the time the plugin is announced and just like to see how it works. Yes. And this is particularly true in GIS software. If you look at R, for instance, they provide datasets that can be accessed so simply. It is excellent, because you are able to *really* play with data in a matter of seconds, literally. For instance, in R, all you have to do is: contour(10 * (1:nrow(2 * volcano)), 10 * (1:ncol(2 * volcano)), 1.5 * volcano, pretty(range(volcano))) To get, in ONE line, a contour map from a volcano in New Zealand. Similarly, to get a perspective view of the same data: persp(10 * (1:nrow(2 * volcano)), 10 * (1:ncol(2 * volcano)), 1.5 * volcano, theta = 140, phi = 30, scale = FALSE, axes = FALSE, shade = 0.5, border = NA) In fact, the variable 'volcano' seems to directly contain a whole dataset. No need to do any file/open or anything. Another example with another dataset provided with R, 'iris': pairs(iris[1:4], main=Edgar Anderson's Iris Data, pch=21,bg = c(red, green3, blue)[unclass(iris$Species)]) In my humble opinion, this solution is extremely effective, from the end-user-beginner point of view. Now, back to qgis: there is already the Alaska dataset, also the grass spearfish dataset. I would be in favour of compiling a state-of-the-art complete dataset, so that users can play immediately with it, and get a good feeling about softwares. Not only plug-ins, but the whole thing. This could be a sort of standard, a base on which any GIS newbie could rely on to make his own dataset: just erase all example data, and fill with your own, and you're up and running. Such a dataset has, of course, to be free (freedom), it may have data such as: - an srtm dem, - a topo map, - gpx data, - satellite imagery - a scanned geological map (sorry, je prêche pour ma paroisse = if someone knows the English translation, go on and translate ;) ), - a scanned pedological map, - a set of pictures taken from the ground, geotagged, - buildings as vectors, - roads as vectors, - field occupation (occupation du sol, in French: not sure about translation) as vectors, - a postgis database, - an sqlite database, - a mysql (forgot about postgis equivalent, sorry) database, - a whole grass dataset, - etc, etc. (unlimited) Then, any plug-in developer should add to this dataset some sample data. I think such a sample dataset should be: - well-structured (state of the art = so that the GIS newbies can inherit from the experience/errors from senior users), - small, in terms of size: this way, when a user tries some features, it doesn't run for hours or colonize the whole user's RAM, - available separately from the software itself (regarding issues mentioned during the initial discussion); if it was for instance a linux package, it could be something like qgis-sample-data. The spearfish dataset could well be a base for such an exercise. Or Alaska. Or anything else. There was a Doncaster totally fake dataset, provided with GDM (geological package): it was invented, by mixing different data from various places, mangling data. I hope if it will be in python plugin repository soon. I just like to try it. If such a solution was adopted, then every plugin developer should add relevant data in the sample data set. Or, maybe, publish on the repository a small dataset, which would make the complement of the existing whole dataset? Your opinions? Silly ideas? Utopia?... Re: [Qgis-developer] Error for postgres's provider when table(statement SELECT ) is outside public's schema
Hi Ricardo, Thanks for explaining these things. The default of Spatialite uses Geometry and PK_UID as you can see test-2.3.sqlite. All spatialite databases immigrated using the utilities of spatialite have Geometry and PK_UID as default. You can also see it in the Spatialite Tutorials. http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite/spatialite-tutorial-2.3.1.html#t1 As suggestion, if you don't mind, probably you can change the default to Geometry and PK_UID to avoid confusion especially for the new users. However, you also put a checkbox option if you like. I think it would be nice to some documentation in plugin. e.g. PRAGMA TABLE_INFO(table_name) to view table before you start using the plugin. The probably a link to this Spatialite Tutorials (i.e. http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite/spatialite-tutorial-2.3.1.html#t1 ). Thanks. As for your specific problem: the SQL query you are using is: Select * from Regions where NAME = 'VENETO' - If you only intend to visualize the results in the 'result' tab of the plugin, without loading to map canvas, it works fine just like this. - BUT, If you want to load the result of the query to the map canvas, you must ensure that the 'Geometry column' and 'Identifier column' text boxes are showing the correct values for your specific tables. Using a spatialite db, I've set the default values for these text boxes as 'geometry' and 'pkuid', but you need to confirm if your data are using these names as well. In this case, the correct values should be 'Geometry' and 'PK_UID'. You can check the names of the columns in an sqlite table by using the spatialite manager, or by running the following query: PRAGMA TABLE_INFO(table_name) If you use the wrong geometry and identifier values you may (or may not) still be able to visualize your data over the map canvas but the attribute values will come as ERROR. As for the deletion of tables from the spatialite db, there isn't a nice way of doing this. To the best of my knowledge you still have to manually create the SQL DROP TABLE... statement and also remove the triggers and geometry info from spatialite by running the SQL SELECT DiscardGeometryColumn... I think this feature will come around sooner or later. It belongs to the (spatialite)manager plugin, and, even if I miss it as well, I don't think it should be implemented in the custom db query plugin. Author’s Note: The Quantum GIS information listed on the comparison matrix is based on the help files and literature provided by the Quantum GIS developer group, none of which I tested. RJ Zimmer at American Surveyor magazine is dummkopf. I think we need to correct this comparison chart. We can probably develop our own Qgis features chart without the comparison and include it in the Qgis brochure. Probably someone should write the Editor of the magazine to correct this baseless review of the QGIS. Tim, probably you can write a blog on this to correct this thing. [Qgis-developer] Selecting an Enterprise GIS Solution - QGIS is Selected!
Hi, I found this article while browsing, Selecting an Enterprise GIS Solution Selecting an Enterprise GIS Solution - QGIS is selected. DSE (Department of Sustainability and Environment in Victoria, Australia). Read this article below and visit the website. Thanks, Noli Selecting an Enterprise GIS Solution Wednesday, 08 December 2010 17:52 E-mail Print Client Profile: Anthony Draga - Project Manager, Spatial Information Infrastructure (SII), Department of Sustainability Environment How do you choose the right GIS technology for your enterprise? The Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) has been a long time user of ESRI-based GIS, from the desktop to web mapping. Like many large organisations, DSE has a large number of officers who require desktop GIS tools, but seldom use advanced analytical features. Many of these officers continue to use ArcView 3x although it is outdated and not supported within DSE. DSE contracted Spatial Vision to identify the range of cost-effective alternatives available to fulfil their requirements, including Open Source GIS. Spatial Vision undertook a market-wide review of desktop GIS products to understand the range of options available to meet the Department's functional needs, as well as the associated costs and resources required to implement any new technology. The Spatial Vision consultants commenced by working with DSE project stakeholders to define a comprehensive set of 95 functional and 20 non-functional assessment criteria. This was followed by a desktop investigation of alternative GIS products against a sub-set of the evaluation criteria. In total, 38 individual products were assessed, highlighting three categories of GIS software: open source, commercial and freeware - that is free software from commercial proprietors. Nine products were shortlisted. Each of the shortlisted products were downloaded, installed and evaluated against the full set of DSE criteria. The outcome of the evaluation was the selection of two Open Source GIS products, gvSIG and Quantum GIS, for presentation to DSE project stakeholders. DSE and DPI officers were then provided with an opportunity to conduct a hands-on assessment of the useability of the two products. Overall, Quantum GIS was rated highest in functionality and useability. Compliance Assessment for the 9 Shortlisted Products. The two Arc products failed to meet the requirement to create and edit data hence the high non-compliance. Implementing an alternative GIS product needs to consider more than just application functionality. Consideration must also be given to the impacts of the preferred software for data storage and distribution, symbology standards, and approaches to ensure that potential users are adequately engaged, trained and supported. Open Source software may not involve purchase costs but implementation is another matter. To assist DSE to determine the viability of the favoured Open Source solution, implementation costs across a five-year period were compared with those associated with a commercial package. This investigation confirmed the potential for the Open Source solution to deliver cost savings but only over the longer term. DSE is now undertaking a larger trial of Quantum GIS to determine its suitability. The use of Quantum GIS is not intended to replace DSE's investment in ArcGIS for more sophisticated analysis, mapping and data management activities, rather provide a complimentary alternative for basic view, query and map production tasks. http://www.spatialvision.com.au/index.php/component/content/article/46-strategic-advice-projects/521-selecting-an-enterprise-gis-solution.html ___ Qgis-developer mailing list Qgis-developer@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-developer

Hi Stefan, Better read this one (below) to fix some of the problems you mentioned. http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite-2.4.0-4/splite-python.html Please note on this caveat found in the document above. Caveat The most recent QGIS versions (1.6 / 1.7 trunk) are actually using SpatiaLite v.2.4.0 so any Python plugin using the previous v.2.3.1 can easily cause conflicts due to version incompatilibiles. And this fully accounts for any issue noticed by QGIS users. Noli On 4/29/11, Stefan Keller sfkel...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, We are currently developing a Python Plugin for QGIS. We tried to load the spatialite-Extension manually, using SELECT load_extension('libspatialite-2.dll');, but that resulted in an exception not authorized. Re: [Qgis-developer] QGIS MapServer and jQuery OpenLayer Client for Mobile Devices
Hi Andreas, Thanks again for your reply. The reason why I went with ExtJS, GeoExt and OpenLayers is that there is a community of governmental organizations around these frameworks in Switzerland, where I work. This way we can share costs and knowledge. For sure I will go for ExtJS, GeoExt and Openlayers for PC. No question about that. In fact, I like to use ExtJS or Sencha Touch in the mobile as well. As to mobile frameworks the same group decided to sponsor OpenLayers to improve mobile device support. This is now available as part of OpenLayers 2.11. We decided that we will be using the Sencha framework (instead of jquery mobile), because it is from the same company/community like ExtJS and also GeoExt will most likely be using the Sencha framework. The only reason at the moment for I am using jQuery mobile is, I am able to use Spatialite local server with DOM and WebKit in iOS device (hopefully in Android, etc as well, Meego tablet is probably easier). It is hybrid application. It is OL script is enclosed in an Native app. I could do the same with Sencha Touch but again no Spatialite or Sqlite full support, just local web storage. I expect to start working on a mobile client in parallel to QGIS webclient (we could name it QGIS mobile client) in autumn this year if someone wants to join the effort. OK. I will help you on package it, making it a Native app in iOS, Android and Meego. Sencha touch - kitchen sink demo runs as a Native app in iOS SDK 4.3. I am using iOS 4.2 at moment. Regarding the WMS layer of gis.uster.ch: you should see all you need in the GetCapabilities request listed at http://gis.uster.ch/ - it really contains all the information you need to later issue GetMap, GetFeatureInfo, GetLegendGraphic or GetPrint requests. Note that this is a raster based WMS - it is not a WFS. Here is one link to a GetCapbilities request: http://gis.uster.ch/cgi/qgis_mapserv.fcgi?map=/home/www/projekte/av/grundplan_av.qgsservice=WMSRequest=GetCapabilities Ich habe keine anhung, how to use this. OK. I will look at it later on. At the moment, I am concentrating in getting my WKT from Spatilalite queries to render to OL. I have problem isolating the WKT data column so I can pass it to textarea then to WKT passer for OL map render. Thanks a lot. Personally, I'd love to see the menus get cleaned up so that qgis looks/feels/acts more like a mac application on mac platforms. This is a problem that arose sometime after 1.4 or 1.5, but it is now becoming more than a distraction. Multiple, redundant (you like that irony?) menu items, disorganized menu structures, Help menu not last in the menu bar, etc. John, probably you can make a mock up on the menu structure for QGIS Mac OS X and post the URL link so everybody can see. Then, we can customise QGIS for Mac OS X to our linking. Tim has good info how to use the qtcreator with qgis which make UI easier to manupulate. http://linfiniti.com/2011/06/using-qtcreator-with-qgis/ I for one would like to resurrect my nkids icon set for QGIS and I think QGIS for Mac OS X needs bit of crystal icons i.e. glossy icon sets.
