It seems that fitting an equal-rate model of ancestral state
reconstruction with a root constraint now returns an error message. It
looks like a recent bug.
It has something to do with a function called internally by find.mle
{diversitree}, but I am not able to understand the exact

Not sure how this bug was introduced. It may be because you were once
able to root the tree at a tip, but now you cannot. I will have to roll
back ape & check. You can work around it by setting the optional
argument tips to TRUE, i.e.:
