charged with designing a library metadata carrier from scratch
nowadays would come up with the hybrid MARCXML+extensions that I'm
proposing, but it is a better intermediate than ISO2709.

help ILS designers trying to do something with the format designation
such as limit searches on it. The 347$b proposed in DP04 can't come
soon enough.
