I'm told 502$a is reserved for the full note, with no subfields, and
should not be used for the lacking Thesis, Dissertation, or other
term. I am told it should go

As you say, in the structured 502 $a is not used. In which case $g Thesis would
be helpful, incorrect, or superfluous
is superfluous.
Also, can your system display the text in $g in front of the other data?
If not, I think it would just look odd.

LC-PCC policy statement for 7.9 says to record the sub-elements... in
the appropriate subfield[s] of MARC field 502, without AACR2-style
punctuation between the sub-fields and has an example with $b $c $d.
It also has an AACR2-style example, with note AACR2-style note; uses $a
only.
