Yup, that's the issue and clearly a bug. It's different than the one
Frederic reported, but they both have to do with permission errors

Yes, I am running as root on the machine being backed up, though I'm
connecting as a normal user to the destination machine. Can you try doing a
second backup (to the same destination) and see if it still works? That
seems to be where I run into problems. Also I'm running v1.1.5 which

the backup it eventually complained about the permissions on the same file
