If the temperature is right, my IR camera can see the rafters. Best to
check early on a cold morning with the heat on in the building.
Otherwise I'm of the William "Hammer" system persuasion. Never found
anything better.

I started using the Bosch D-tect 150 a few years ago after a friend who had
success with it recommended it. Works great on most roofs. It needs a
smooth surface to roll on so I use a piece of Soladeck box. Older roofs

Another reason why I never put solar panels on a dwelling roof.
However, it seems crazy to be drilling holes to find the rafter still in

Can echo this, I did a fresh look into this last year and still have not found
anything better than a hammer and feeler tool.
We are considering going to a deck direct attachment like rooftech as well,
which makes rafter locations less critical. We intend to still have crews find
the rafter
