There are very good roof mounting systems that do not require finding the rafter. There was a thread on this within the past two weeks.  I understand the comfort of lagging into a rafter, but unless you can see the rafters from below, you'll never know 100% you did not come out the side of the

Hi Kris, I started using the Bosch D-tect 150 a few years ago after a friend who had success with it recommended it. Works great on most roofs. It needs a smooth surface to roll on so I use a piece of Soladeck box. Older roofs with ply over roof boards don't scan very well so I sometimes go
