All the connections you desire are available on the D-9 (aka DB-9) 
jack on the radio. I seem to remember the the manual information 
was backwards for the receiver audio connections on the DR-235 
manual sheet I had. 

But I was able to obtain all the needed Tx & Rx audio and logic 
connections I needed through that D-9 Jack. 

I seem to remember you must put the radio into the analog (not 
packet mode) and tap the analog rx audio pin on the jack. One 
rx pin is discriminator audio (unsquelched) and the one you want 
is gated (squelched)... so be sure to look for and look at both 
RX Audio sources listed on the paperwork with the radio programming 
set for analog.  If you don't get the expected results, toggle 
the programming to the other mode and look at the same RX audio 
pins.
