Motorola had two factory options that would allow control of the
MSF5000 station, the DTMF decoder and the SAM [Station Access
Module].
The SAM card can respond to DTMF, MDC, and other signaling formats
and is the most versatile. It was also referred to as the Smart
Wildcard. Unfortunately,
the repeater using a
portable or mobile radio with a DTMF mike.

Not only am I cheap, I'm lazy. Building something takes time. I was mainly
interested in a product I could buy that just needed power, incoming
audio, and a set of dry contacts that could be stuck inside the MSF5000
cabinet and be ready to use in a matter of minutes.
